Princeton, N.J. - Princeton used three goals apiece from senior Lauren Simone and sophomore Theresa Sherry to defeat Virginia in a St. Patrick's Day battle at Class of 1952 Stadium. The Princeton defense withstood a furious Virginia rally and held on for the 13-11 win, improving the Tigers' record to 3-1 on the year.
Junior Alex Fiore found the net only 1:11 into the contest to give Princeton the early lead. It was a lead the Tigers would hold throughout the game. Senior Kim Smith then scored two straight goals with assists from Simone and Fiore to put Princeton up 3-0 eight minutes into the game.
Virginia's Cary Chasney answered with back-to-back goals of her own to pull the Cavaliers within one, but three consecutive goals from Princeton pushed the lead back up to four. After another Virginia goal, Sherry took a pass from Lindsey Biles and slipped past the Cavalier defense for her third goal of the day. Virginia scored the next two and Princeton led 7-5 at the half. The Tiger offense was clicking on all cylinders to start the second half. Fiore netted a free position goal at 33:29, junior Rachael Becker assisted Simone on her second goal the game at 35:30, and junior Whitney Miller scored 18 seconds later to give Princeton its biggest lead of the game at 10-5.
Virginia's Chasney scored off a Molly Cangemi assist and then Cangemi scored a goal of her own and the Cavs drew within three points. Princeton got big goals from senior captains Charlotte Kenworthy and Lauren Simone to make the score 12-7. Virginia came storming back with four unanswered goals and cut the lead to one. It was Miller's goal at 55:21, however, that sealed Princeton's third straight win.
Sherry finished with three caused turnovers, two ground balls and an assist to go along with her three goals. Fiore added two goals and an assist while both Miller and Smith ended the game with two goals. Senior Brooke Owens won two draw controls, caused two turnovers and picked up a ground ball for Princeton and freshman Sarah Kolodner registered nine saves in goal.
Virginia drops to 5-2 on the year and loses to Princeton for the fourth straight time. The Tigers, ranked No. 3 in the nation heading into the game, face No. 1 Duke at Class of 1952 Stadium at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20.
