Princeton, N.J. - Senior Kim Smith scored five times in the first half and the Tigers built an 8-0 halftime lead en route to a 13-5 pounding of the Duke Blue Devils on a rain-soaked Wednesday afternoon in Princeton, N.J.
The Tigers pounced on the Blue Devils early with Smith scoring her first goal of the game only 1:44 into the contest. Sophomore Theresa Sherry notched her 12th goal of the season less than one minute later and Smith scored again at 3:54 to put Princeton up 3-0 less than four minutes into the game.
After senior Charlotte Kenworthy connected on a free position shot, Smith scored back-to-back goals and the route was on. Duke had been ranked the No. 1 team in the nation in each of this season's first two polls, but had suffered a defeat to North Carolina on Saturday. "We really don't look at who we're playing. We know we have to play as a team and that is our focus," says Smith. "I don't think that we played better in either half, but everything felt like it was going in at the start of the game."
Smith scored off a free position shot at 27:24 to close out the half with five goals and an 8-0 lead. Duke scored two straight goals to open the second period, but Princeton had an answer for each Duke tally. Junior Whitney Miller finished the game with three goals and an assist while senior Mimi Hammerberg and Theresa Sherry had two goals apiece.
The Tigers posted 15 first-half shots, allowing Duke only five. The Blue Devils finished with 14 shots compared to Princeton's 22. Princeton freshman Sarah Kolodner moved to 3-0 as a starter, stopping five shots and picking up two ground balls.
"I think that this is the most complete game we've played all year," says Princeton head coach Chris Sailer. "We really played well as a team."
Princeton has now won four straight and improves to 4-1 on the year. Duke drops its second consecutive game and now stands at 5-2 overall. The Tigers improve to 5-1 all-time against the Blue Devils and now head to Penn State to face the Nittany Lions on Saturday, March 23.
