New York, N.Y. - Senior Mimi Hammerberg scored two goals and assisted on three more as Princeton dominated an overmatched Columbia squad in New York, N.Y. on Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers posted 13 first-half goals in a 17-1 thrashing of the Lions in front of a prevalent Princeton crowd at Baker Field.
Princeton had the game in hand from start to finish, out-shooting the Lions 27-7 and recovering 25 ground balls compared to Columbia's 13. Junior Alex Fiore began the onslaught with the game's first goal at 5:36. Senior Charlotte Kenworthy scored 23 seconds later and after registering an assist on Kim Smith's goal at 8:01, Kenworthy scored her second goal of the game at 8:17. Kenworthy finished the half with three goals, Hammerberg and Smith added two apiece and the Tigers led 13-0 at the break. Freshman goalie Sarah Kolodner recorded three saves in 30 shutout minutes for Princeton.
Freshman Lindsey Biles scored twice to open the second half with assists from Fiore and Ingred Goldberg. After Nina Carbone took a pass from Mary Beth Hogan and slipped a shot past Columbia's Diana Weinstein, the score was 16-0. The Lions did, however, end Princeton's bid for its second shutout in program history with Maggie Vie's goal at 53:19.
Tara Hardiman capped the game's scoring with a goal at 58:36 and Princeton's sixth straight win resulted in its largest margin of victory all year.
"We wanted to get off to a good start in the Ivy League," says head coach Chris Sailer. "We played with a lot of intensity and I feel that we did a lot of good things on both offense and defense today."
Princeton improves to 6-1 on the year and 1-0 in the Ivy League. The Tigers are now 5-0 against Columbia all-time with an average margin of victory equaling today's 16-point win. The Lions drop to 4-4 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
"It was great to get everyone good playing time," says Sailer. "Our bench played real well. They stayed within the game plan, we had some real nice defensive plays, we won most of the second half draw controls and I think everyone received some good experience."
Among those leaving a mark were sophomore Katie Coyne, who won two draw controls and cataloged her first point of the season with an assist to junior Sarah Small. Carbone, Hardiman and freshmen Elizabeth Pillion all scored for the second time this season and freshmen Leigh Slonaker doubled her point total this season with two goals and an assist. Sophomore goalkeeper Megan McInnis also picked up three saves in the second half of play.
Princeton returns home and continues conference play on Saturday, March 30. The Tigers host Cornell in at noon at Class of 1952 Stadium.
