Princeton, N.J. - Senior Kim Smith and sophomore Theresa Sherry combined for half of Princeton's 16 points as the No. 2 Tigers cruised to a 16-12 victory over Cornell at Class of 1952 Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers extended their win streak to seven, handing Cornell its first loss of the season in the process.
The Tigers found themselves in an unfamiliar spot early the game, they trailed 3-1 five minutes in. It didn't take long for normalcy to return, however, with goals by Sherry and senior Mimi Hammerberg less than a minute apart to tie the score at 3-3. Cornell answered with Sarah Fischer's goal at 12:28 and the Big Red led 4-3. It was the last lead Cornell would have as Princeton subsequently went on a 5-0 run and scored six of the next eight goals to close out the half with a 9-6 lead. Princeton's offense came out smoking in the second half Smith finding the back of Cornell's net only 16 seconds in. Twelve second later, senior Charlotte Kenworthy scored off Smith's assist to make the score 11-6. It was only one minute later that freshman Lindsey Biles scored off a pass from Sherry and the Tigers were off and running with a 12-6 lead.
Cornell pulled within four points with back-to-back goals at 51:59 and 52:25, but Hammerberg answered with her second goal of game as the Tigers ran out the clock for their seventh straight win after opening the season with an overtime loss to No. 1 Georgetown. Cornell entered as the No. 9 team in the nation with a perfect 5-0 record, but leave at 5-1 as Princeton improves to 7-1 and 2-0 in the Ivy League.
Simone finished the game with three goals for Princeton, Hammerberg had two goals and two assists, while Biles, Kenworthy and junior Whitney Miller all scored one goal. Sherry now leads the team with 20 goals and six assists despite missing Wednesday's game at Columbia.
"I was really excited to be back with my team and contributing again," says Sherry. "My teammates set me up nicely today and the rest just fell into place."
Sophomore Megan McInnis and freshman Sarah Kolodner split the goalkeeping duties for the second straight game. McInnis finished with six saves and Kolodner picked up three. Junior Rachael Becker spearheaded the defense with three caused turnovers while also picking up a ground ball and controlling a draw.
Princeton returns to action at Class of 1952 Stadium on Wednesday, April 3 with a 7:30 p.m. game against Delaware.
