DURHAM, NC - Princeton baseball returned to action after being washed out on Sunday, and suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Duke on Monday at Jack Coombs Field. The Blue Devils won the opener 13-5, and withstood a Tiger rally in the second game for a 10-8 win. Princeton drops to 2-6, while Duke improves to 13-7.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the third inning after Eric Fitzgerald (So., Bellaire, TX) singled and scored on Pat Boran's (Sr., Pottsville, PA) single to center field.
The Blue Devils quickly erased that lead by sending 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the frame. Duke capitalized on two Princeton errors and scored six runs on three hits to take a lead that the Tigers could not overcome. Larry Boradway contributed a two-run double in the inning. Princeton got one run back in the sixth and had the chance to score more. It had the bases loaded with one out but a double play ended the scoring opportunity. The Tigers added one unearned run in the seventh before Duke broke open the game with seven runs on six hits in the bottom of the seventh inning. Justin Calliham hit a grand slam to cap the inning. He went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBIs in the game.
Princeton would add two runs in the top of the ninth inning. Boran doubled to right field to drive in Tyler Hassen (Fr., Greenwich, CT), who had opened the inning with a single. Jon Miller (Jr., Washington, DC) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Will Taylor (So., Pawling, NY). That was all the offense that the Tigers could muster and Duke closed out the 13-5 win.
Ross Ohlendorf (Fr., Austin, TX) got the start and pitched four innings. He gave up four hits while striking out six and allowing no earned runs. Jason Vaughan (Fr., Garland, TX) threw three innings allowing seven runs on seven hits. Brian Kappel (Fr., Atlanta, GA) pitched the final inning and struck out two batters.
Justin Diluccio earned the win for the Blue Devils. He gave up nine hits and two earned runs in 5.1 innings of work.
In the second game Duke's Larry Boradway showed why he earned preseason All-America honors. The first basemen was 4-for-4 with two home runs, three runs scores and four runs batted in.
The hosts jumped out to an early lead, scoring five runs on four hits in the first inning. Kevin Kelly smacked a two-run double to right center field to highlight the inning.
Princeton got on the board when Ryan Eldridge (Fr., Stafford, VA) scored in the top of the second inning, but Duke scored two runs in the second and one in the third to stretch its lead to 8-1.
The Tigers fought back to knot the game at 8-8 when they sent 12 batters to the plate en route to a seven-run sixth inning. Princeton got run-scoring base hits from Paul Ackerman (Fr., Lincolnshire, IL), Ryan Reich (So., Ocean City, NJ), Hassen, Adam Balkan (Fr., Roslyn, NY) and Eldridge.
Unfortunately for Princeton, Duke answered in the bottom of the sixth when Broadway hit his second home run of the game to vie the Blue Devils a one-run lead. Tim Layden doubled and scored in the eighth to cap the scoring and also pitched 3.2 innings in relief to earn the win.
David Boehle (Jr., Redwood City, CA) pitched three innings, striking out one while giving up eight hits and five earned runs. Brian Biegan (So., Middletown, CT) continued to have a strong spring. He pitched three innings and recorded three strikeouts and giving up just two hits. Mark Siano (Jr., Fort Collins, CO) came on to pitch in the sixth inning and took the loss. He gave up five hits and two runs in three innings.
Princeton will return to action tomorrow when it heads to Chapel Hill to face North Carolina.
