Providence, R.I. - Freshman goalie Madeline McCarthy registered 16 saves in three quarters of action on Saturday afternoon at the Brown Invitational as the women's water polo went 1-1 with a victory over Queens and loss to Michigan. Princeton eased past Queens 18-2 but could not hang on against Michigan and fell 9-7.
Freshman Kathryn Parolin scored four goals while both junior Adele McCarthey-Beavais and freshman Mariah Zebrowski connected on three goals for the Tigers in their win over Queens. McCarthy, playing only the first half of action, picked up five saves in goal. Sophomore Lauren Lister recorded six saves in the second half.
Princeton held a 7-6 lead on Michigan midway through the fourth quarter with two goals from freshman Julia Miller and a goal apiece by McCarthey-Beavais, junior Jennifer Edwards, junior Joanna Armstrong and sophomore Annie Olson. The Wolverines, however, scored two fast break goals and outscored the Tigers 3-0 to close out the game.
Princeton finished the Michigan game 1 for 7 with the man-up advantage, including an 0 for 4 spot in the first half.
"We had a strong defensive effort today," says head coach Luis Nicolao. "We just missed too many opportunities on the offensive end."
The Tigers are now 6-1 overall after losing their first match of the season. Princeton will conclude play at the Brown Invitational, tomorrow, March 3.
