Baseball Suffers Tough 12-4 Loss At Elon

ELON, NC - Elon put five runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning, and added seven in the third inning for a lead that Princeton could not overcome as the Phoenix held on for a 12-4 win on Thursday afternoon at Walter C. Latham Park. The Orange and Black outscored Elon 4-0 through the final six innings.
The Tigers are in the midst of a six game losing streak. They opened their spring trip with a win over Duke, but then lost the last three games against Duke and two against North Carolina.
Princeton had bases loaded with one out in the top of the first inning. Adam Balkan got the inning going with a one-out single through the right side. Pat Boran got on base on an error by the pitcher. And Jon Miller walked to load the bases but Phoenix hurler Thomas Dodson got out of the inning with two strikeouts that kept the Tigers off the board. Princeton was able to get on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Tim Lahey and Mike Chernoff got on base with one out walks. Steve Young was hit by a pitch to load the bases and pinch hitter Tyler Hassen scored Lahey on a fielder's choice.
Princeton put three runs on the board in the tip of the seventh. Balkan walked to open the inning and Boren was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base. Ryan Eldridge lined a double in the left center gap to drive in both runs. Ryan Reich was hit by a pitch and Lahey singled through the left side to load the bases. Mike Chernoff scored Eldridge on a fielders choice for the third and final run of the inning.
Brian Biegen got the start for Princeton for his third appearance of the season. He pitched four innings going into the start, giving up just three earned runs on seven hits and struck out two.
Brian Kappel came on in the third inning. He gave up three hits and four runs that inning but shut down the Phoenix in the fourth, recording one strikeout along the way.
Thomas Pauly came to the mound in the top of the fifth inning and shut down the Phoenix for the next two innings. He gave up two and recorded three strikeouts. Worth Lumry pitched the bottom of the seventh inning and Eldridge pitched the bottom of the eighth.
Princeton is now 2-9 this season. The Tigers will close out their spring swing with four games at William & Mary. The series will open with a game at 7 p.m. on Friday night. The two teams have added a game on Saturday. That doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m. with the second game immediately following the first. The spring trip will conclude with a game vs. the Tribe on Sunday at 1 p.m.
