WILLIAMSBURG, VA - Ross Ohlendorf pitched six strong innings, and Thomas Pauly came in to finish the game as Princeton closed out its spring trip with its second-straight win, a 8-2 decision over William & Mary on Sunday afternoon at Plumeri Park. The Tigers improve to 4-11, the Tribe drops to 14-12.
Ohlendorf and Pauly combined to limit the Tribe to two runs on nine hits in the win. Ohlendorf had the start and pitched six strong innings. He gave up five hits and one earned run, while recording six strikeouts. Pauly came on in the top of the seventh inning and got the save, his second of the season. He gave up four hits and no earned runs with three strikeouts.
Princeton's bats took care of the rest. The Tigers had six batters with two hits and every batter had at least one en route to a 15-hit performance. The Tribe struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning and held that 1-0 lead until the top of the fourth.
Tim Lahey tied the game at 1-1 win one swing in the top of the fourth inning when he sent a shot over the right center fence for his first home run of the year.
William & Mary had bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Ohlendorf was able to get Matt Kirby to strikeout and John Lentz to fly out to right fielder Ryan Reich to end the inning.
Princeton padded its leas with three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Reich singled to open the inning but that hit was canceled when Chernoff grounded into a double play. Eric Fitzgerald singled through the right side of the infield and moved to second on Pat Boran's infield single. Adam Balkan singled up the middle to load the bases with two outs. Jon Miller singled back up the middle to score two runs. Balkan added the third run on the play by scoring on an error by the centerfielder.
In the sixth inning Chernoff hit a two out double to score Reich, who had reached base with a single to extend Princeton's lead to 5-1.
Boran opened the seventh inning with a standup triple to center. Balkan struck out swinging but reached first on the wild pitch. He advanced to second on Miller's grounder to third. Voelker was given an intentional pass to load the bases with one out. Boran and Balkan scored on a wild pitch. Lahey singled up the middle to score Voelker
The Tribe had runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the eighth, but a line drive to Ryan Eldridge, who then doubled the runner at first, canceled that threat. William & Mary added one run in the bottom of the ninth, but left two runners on as the Tigers were able to close out the 8-2 win.
Tribe hurler Bill Bray took the loss. He pitched 6.1 innings, giving up six earned runs on 13 hits. He recorded nine strikeouts on the day.
Princeton will open its home and Ivy League season on Friday, March 29 at 11:30 with a doubleheader against Pennsylvania. The Tigers will host the Quakers on Saturday, March 30 at 11:30. Those games will be held at Clarke Field.
