Box Score
Princeton, N.J. - Maureen Lane poured in 30 points and hit two clutch free throws to lift Princeton over Pennsylvania at Jadwin Gym on Wednesday night. The Tigers finish the season at 11-16 overall and 5-9 in the Ivy League with a gripping 66-65 win in the Ivy season finale.
Lane started the game on fire and never seemed to cool. She scored the first five Princeton points of the night and went into the halftime locker room with 17 points on 7 of 11 shooting, including 3 of 6 from three-point range. Penn scored 12 first-half points off of Princeton turnovers, but the Tigers led 39-38 at the break.
A very tight second-half saw Penn go up 65-62 late in the game. Lane hit a runner and the Quakers led 65-64. Penn's Catherine Makarewich went to the free throw and after the front end of a 1-and-1 rimmed out, Lane grabbed the rebound and was fouled by Jenn Jones. With six ticks left on the clock, Lane knocked down both free throws to make the final 66-65. Kelly Schaeffer scored 15 points and garnered eight rebounds, senior Lauren Rigney posted eight points, three assists, three rebounds, one block and one steal in her final collegiate game. Jones led Penn with 13 points while Jewel Clark, Julie Epton and Katie Kilker all had 11 for the Quakers.
The Tigers finish the on a roll, winning three of their last four games. Princeton improves to 5-1 when Lane is the team's leading scorer and Penn drops to 12-15 on the year and 8-6 in the conference.
Princeton's season sweep of Penn is its first since the 1996-97 season. First-year head coach Richard Barron matched Princeton's combined win total in its previous two years with the victory. The Tigers won two games last season and nine in 1999-2000.
"This was a great way to finish the season," says Barron. "We had a tough stretch but we found a way to pull ourselves out of it and ended the season playing well. I'm very excited about next season."
