Philadelphia, Pa. - Lauren Simone scored five goals, picked up five ground balls and registered two assists to lead Princeton past a streaky Temple team on Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers posted eight goals each half en route to a 16-8 win at Geasey Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
Simone scored four of her goals in the game's first 15 minutes. She gave Princeton the early advantage, notching two goals on each side of sophomore Theresa Sherry's two goals and the Tigers led 6-1 behind the offense of the Ivy League's top two scorers. Seniors Charlotte Kenworthy and Mimi Hammerberg chipped in with a goal apiece and Princeton possessed an 8-1 halftime lead. "My teammates really set me up for some good shots," says Simone. "This team has so many scoring threats and that enables us to go to the hot hand."
Princeton has gone to the hot hand early and often. The Tigers have 89 first-half goals this season, opponents have only 34 first-half goals and 84 total goals this year. The Tigers' explosive offense has resulted in 161 total goals in 11 games played.
Temple was not frustrated, however, responding with three unanswered goals to open the second half. The Tigers came back when freshman Lindsey Biles took Sherry's feed and scored Princeton's ninth goal at 37:02. One minute later, Sherry scored off a pass from Simone to extend the lead to 10-4. The Owls' final push produced four goals in a two-minute span, but Princeton ended the game with two goals of its own to make the final margin eight points.
Biles, Kenworthy and Sherry all finished the game with three goals. Hammerberg picked up one goal and two assists. Junior Sarah Small scored her fourth goal of the season and junior Whitney Miller picked up her fifth and sixth assists of the year.
Princeton entered the game ranked No. 1 in the national poll. Temple broke into the rankings this week, coming into the game ranked No. 20. The Tigers extended their win streak to 10 games and improved their overall record to 10-1, dropping Temple to 6-4 in the process.
"Anytime you are ranked as one of the top teams in the country, other teams are looking for an opportunity to get a significant win," says Princeton head coach Chris Sailer. "Being ranked No. 1 is great. This team gives a lot of effort, we play hard and we're winning. It is definitely nice to get the recognition, but it's were you finish at the end of the season that really matters."
Princeton returns to Ivy League action this Saturday, April 13 at Harvard. The Tigers are 3-0 and in first-place in the conference. Saturday's game begins at noon and can be heard via Web cast on www.GoPrincetonTigers.com.
