PROVIDENCE, RI - Adam Balkan went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, but Princeton committed four errors en route to a 5-3 loss at Brown in the first game of an Ivy League doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Providence, RI. The Tigers drop to 11-15, 6-3. Brown improves to 13-15, 3-2 with the win.
Princeton jumped on Brown starter Jonathan Stern in the top of the first inning. Pat Boran drew a leadoff walk and Eric Fitzgerald ran out an infield single to give the Tigers runners at first and second for Adam Balkan. Balkan drilled a double to left center that scored Boran and Fitzgerald for an early 2-0 Princeton lead. That lead did not last long however as Brown took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the first. The Bears capitalized on two early walks from Princeton starter Ross Ohlendorf to have two runners on. Greg Metzger singled through the right side to plate Robert Deeb for the first run of the inning. Shaun Gallagher's sacrifice fly to right scored Matt Kutler, then Metzger stole second and advanced to third when the throw went into center. James Lowe ripped a shot off Ohlendorf's leg to score Metzger and give the Bears a 3-2 lead.
Adam Royster opened the bottom of the fourth with a triple to the fence in left center but he was left stranded. Ohlendorf got Jeff Nichols to pop out to second and then caught a break when Royster was caught trying to steal home. Ohlendorf closed out the inning by striking out Magaletti.
Brown added to its lead with two runs in the fifth. Deeb received a one-out walk and then scored when Kutler hit a triple to center. Metzger plated Kutler with the second run of the inning when he grounded out to the shortstop.
The Tigers threatened in the top of the sixth. Balkan singled up the middle to get the inning started but that hit was canceled when Ryan Reich grounded into a double play. Ryan Eldridge ripped a double to center and advanced to third on Jon Miller's single to give Princeton runners at the corners, but that was as far as they would get.
The Tigers would add another run in the top of the seventh. Tim Lahey opened the inning with a double down the leftfield line and advanced to third on Chernoff's groundout. Boran's sacrifice fly to center scored Lahey to cut the score to 5-3, but that was as close as Princeton would get as Brown held on for the 5-3 win.
Ohlendorf gave up four earned runs on four hits, five walks and two strikeouts. Mark Siano pitched the sixth, giving up no hits and recording on strikeout.
Stern scattered six hits, three earned runs, one walk and eight strikeouts in the complete game win.
