Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton men's lightweight varsity eight fell to Navy by seven seconds in a strong tailwind on Lake Carnegie. It's the Tigers first defeat of the year, coming off a weekend during which they defeated Georgetown, Columbia, and Penn - all by open water. Navy also won the third varsity, first freshman, and second freshman races. Princeton notched its lone victory in the second varsity event.
In the varsity race, Navy was cleaner off the start than Princeton and walked out to almost a full boat-length's lead by the time the crews had settled to base. The two crews showed similar speed through the middle thousand meters of the course, but Navy used a strong sprint in the final 500 meters to pull away from Princeton.
In the second varsity race, it took Princeton until the last 500 meters to put away the Midshipmen. Princeton clinged to a small lead throughout the race, and the Tigers extended it out to about one boat-length with their sprint.
Navy's third varsity eight beat Princeton by about one boat length. Both Navy freshman crews defeated the Tiger frosh by open water.
