Cambridge, Mass. - Princeton split a double-header with Harvard, winning 4-3 and falling 7-4 on Saturday afternoon at Cambridge, Mass. Princeton is now at 21-15 on the year, Harvard sits at 19-7 after the split.
In the first game, Princeton scored four runs on nine hits and Brie Galicinao did the rest, pitching seven innings , striking out seven. The Tigers went up 1-0 when Becky Nemec scored off Mackenzie Forsythe's single to left.
Princeton extended its lead with three more runs in the fifth. Galicinao, Kristin Lueke, and Kristin Del Calvo all scored for the Tigers and they led 4-0. Harvard answered with one run in the bottom of the fifth and threatened in the seventh, closing the gap to one. Galicinao held on for the win and Princeton was unbeaten in the Ivies. In the second game, Harvard's Tiffany Whitton lifted the Crimson over Princeton with a walk-off grand slam in the seventh inning. Harvard won 7-4, handing Princeton its first Ivy loss of the year.
Harvard went up 2-0 on three hits in the bottom half of the third inning. Princeton answered with a home run off the bat of Del Calvo in the top of the fourth. The score remained 2-1 until the Princeton sixth.
Princeton tied the score with one out in the sixth when Galicinao belted Princeton's second home run of the day. Lueke followed with a triple and scored off a wild pitch two batters later. Nicole Davida, who pinch ran for Del Calvo and moved to third on the wild pitch, scored when Kim Veenstra flied out center field.
The Tigers took a 4-2 lead into the last frame. Harvard's Breanne Cooley scored off Lauren Stefanchik single to right field. The Crimson loaded the bases with one out and Princeton pitcher Wendy Bingham was able to force pinch-hitter Cecily Gordan to ground out, with the Tigers getting the force out at home. Whitton then stepped to the bat with two outs and ended the game with her second walk-off homer of the year.
"I really think we played well today," says Princeton coach Maureen Davis. "I'm proud of our girls and how they came back from a 2-0 deficit. To come back like that and to lose the way we did was just heartbreaking."
Princeton is 7-1 in the Ivy League, Harvard is one game back with a 5-1 conference mark. The Tigers are in action again tomorrow when they face Dartmouth at noon in Hanover, N.H.
