Baseball Tops Yale In 13 Innings

NEW HAVEN, CT -. Mike Chernoff's bloop single to center in the top of the 13th inning scored Jon Miller and Steve Young to break a 3-3 tie and help lift Princeton to a 6-3 win over Yale in the second game of an Ivy League doubleheader at Yale Field on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers lost the first game of the day, 8-1. Princeton is now 13-16, 8-4 in Ivy action. The Bulldogs drop to 8-17, 3-5 with the split.
Chernoff was 3-for-6 with three RBIs and one run scored in the second game. Miller was 2-for-3 with three walks and one run scored. Thomas Pauly pitched the final 6.2 innings, giving up just four hits, no earned runs, and six strikeouts. In the second game Chernoff cranked a double over the right fielder's head to score Adam Balkan in the top of the second and give Princeton an early 1-0 lead.
The Tigers added another run in the top of the fifth. Mike Chernoff opened the inning with an infield single and then advanced to second on a balk. Eric Fitzgerald laid down a bunt and then was hit in the back with the throw from the first baseman, which allowed Chernoff to score.
Yale cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Mike Hirschfield drew a two-out walk and advanced to second on Chris Esper's single to leftcenter. Chris Elkins then hit a single up the middle to score Hirschfield.
The Bulldogs tied it up with another run in the bottom of the seventh. Zac Bradley drew a leadoff walk and then stole second. Esper walked to give Yale runners at first and second, and then Elkins singled through the right side to plate Bradley and knot the game at 2-2.
Tim Lahey gave Princeton a 3-2 lead with one swing, he cranked a solo homerun over the leftfield fence in the top of the ninth.
That lead would not hold. C.J. Orrico's two-out single to left to scored pinch runner Craig Breslow with the tying run in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings.
Blake Golom came to the plate with two outs and runners at the corners, but grounded out to third to end the Bulldog threat.
The Tigers caught a break in the top of the 12th inning. Chernoff hit a grounder to third, but was able to advance all the way to second on the wild throw.
The book closed on Princeton starter David Boehle after five solid innings. He allowed just three hits and one run, while striking out two. Scott Hindman took the mound in the sixth and pitched 1.1 innings. He gave up one hit, one earned run and two walks. Hindman also had two strikeouts before Pauly came out and finished the game.
Eric Voelker scored the only run of the opening game for the Tigers. He drew a two-out walk in the second and then scored the opening run of the game on Adam Balkan's double down the left field line.
Princeton could not survive an eight-run third inning by the Bulldogs. Yale posted eight runs on six hits and two walks in the inning to jump ahead 8-1, which is how the game would finish.
Ryan Quillian got the start for Princeton, but was taken out of the game seven batters into the third inning. He gave up seven runs on five hits, with two walks and two strikeouts to drop to 0-4 with the loss. Bill Broome came in and pitched two innings, giving up three hits and one run with one strikeout. Brian Biegen pitched the last two innings for the Tigers and gave up no hits, while recording one strikeout.
Craig Breslow pitched a complete game in the win for Yale. He scattered five hits and seven strikeouts over seven innings for his first win of the season. Breslow is now 1-2.
Princeton will travel to Seton Hall on Thursday before returning to Gehrig Division action with a four-game series at Columbia.
