Princeton, N.J. - Senior Lauren Simone scored four goals and assisted on two more as Princeton rolled to a 15-3 win over Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon at Class of 1952 Stadium. The Tigers snap a five-game regular season losing streak to the Big Green and extend this season's win streak to 13 games.
"This was the first Ivy win our seniors have had against Dartmouth," says head coach Chris Sailer. "I'm so happy that they could get a win and do it so convincingly."
Simone started the game's scoring when she netted an unassisted goal 5:47 into the game. She then assisted on fellow senior Mimi Hammerberg's goal at 6:31 to give Princeton the early 2-0 edge. Dartmouth's Jen Newitt scored about a minute later to cut the lead in half, but that was as close as the Big Green would get. Freshman Lindsey Biles scored off a free position at 14:36, senior Charlotte Kenworthy scored at 19:16 and sophomore Theresa Sherry slipped past the Dartmouth defense to give Princeton a 5-1 lead with five different Tigers scoring goals.
Kenworthy ended the half with her second goal of the day and junior Whitney Miller became the sixth Princeton player to score when she found the back of the net to open the second half. Sherry then scored back-to-back goals one minute apart and the route was on.
Dartmouth's Newitt came into the game with a league-high 33 goals. She scored all three of Dartmouth's goals, but took 10 shots in the process. Princeton goalie Sara Kolodner slowed Newitt and stopped the rest of the Big Green with a career-high 13 saves. The freshman goalkeeper improved to a perfect 12-0 in goal as a starter and improved her save percentage to .583 on the year.
"Jen Newitt is a good player and after I stopped her free position attempt it really pumped me up," says Kolodner. "I'm just happy to get a win today."
Both Simone and Kenworthy finished with four goals while Sherry added three. Biles scored her 23rd and 24th goals of the season and Hammerberg chipped in with a goal and an assist Miller scored one goal for the third straight game as Princeton scooped up 26 ground balls compared to Dartmouth's 12.
The Tigers, ranked No.1 in the IWLCA Poll, possess the longest current win streak in the nation with 13 straight wins. Princeton improves to 13-1 overall and 6-0 in the Ivy League. With today's win, Princeton has clinched a tournament birth and at least a share of the Ivy crown. With Cornell defeating Yale earlier in the day, the Big Red improve to 5-1 in the conference, one game back of Princeton with one game remaining. The Tigers defeated Cornell earlier in the year, therefore win the tiebreaker.
"We don't look at streaks or too far down the road," says Simone. "We take it one game at a time, but this team is the best one I've been on in my four years at Princeton."
The No. 1 Tigers test themselves next Wednesday, April 24 at Class of 1952 Stadium when they welcome seven-time defending national champion Maryland. Wednesday's showdown pits the last eight national champions against one another and is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start.
