PRINCETON, NJ - Princeton managed just five hits in the opening game, and left 12 runners on base in the second game as the Tigers suffered a pair of losses, 4-2 and 5-2 at the hands of visiting Harvard in Ivy League baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Clarke Field. Princeton drops to 8-14 and 4-2 in the Ivy League. The Crimson improve to 5-12, 2-0 in league action.
Mark Mager's two-run shot in the top of the third inning gave Harvard a 3-0 lead and proved to be the difference in the first game. Crimson hurler Justin Nyewide went the distance, giving up five hits and two runs in seven innings, with five strikeouts. Javier Lopez also had two RBIs for the visitors.
Princeton put runs on the board in the bottom of the third and fourth innings. In the third, Pat Boran got things started with a single through the right side and advanced to second on Eric Fitzgerald sacrifice bunt. Adam Balkan, the reigning IvyLeagueSports.com Rookie of the Week doubled to left to score Boran for the Tigers first run of the game. In the fourth inning, Eric Voelker and Tim Lahey put runners at first and second with no outs after they both drew walks. Nyewide got Ryan Reich to ground into a double play, but Voelker was able to reach third on the play. Steve Young singled up the middle to score Voelker for Princeton's only other run of the game.
Ryan Quillian got the start in the first game, giving up eight hits and two earned runs in seven innings. He recorded seven strikeouts in the loss.
Harvard jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first to open the second game. Mager doubled down the right field line to score Chaney Sheffield, and went to third when Marc Hordon singled up the middle. Trey Hendricks recorded the second RBI of the inning when he scored Mager with a sacrifice fly to left.
Princeton came right back to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom half of the inning. Ryan Eldridge singled in Fitzgerald for the first run of the inning. Tim Lahey's groundout scored Balkan to knot the game.
The Tigers had their chances to take the lead, leaving a total of 12 runners on base in the game, but could not put runs up on Harvard hurler Ben Crockett. Harvard tacked on three more runs, one in the fourth and two in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead. Neither team put any runs on the board in the last four innings, as the Crimson held on for the 5-2 win.
Crockett threw the first eight innings for Harvard, scattering eight hits, two earned runs and eight strikeouts. Barry Wahlberg pitched the ninth, gave up one hit and struck out two.
David Boehle got the start for Princeton and went four innings. He gave up eight hits, four earned runs and recorded two strikeouts. The combination of Mark Siano and Scott Hindman dominated the last five innings for Princeton. Siano came on in relief of Boehle and pitched three perfect innings, striking out two batters along the way. Hindman came in to pitch the eighth and ninth innings and picked up where Siano left off. He struck out four of the six batters he faced and gave up no hits.
Princeton will host Dartmouth on Sunday, April 7 at noon in a rematch of last year's Ivy League Championship series. Princeton won that series 2-1 to advance to the NCAA championships. The Tigers will then open a 10-game road trip at Rutgers at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9.
