Baseball Drops First Game To Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, MA - Justin Nyewide hurled a complete game five-hitter, including a career-high 14 strikeouts, to lead Harvard to a 5-1 win over Princeton in game one of the Ivy League Championship Series on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers will have to win this afternoon to force game three on Sunday in this best-of-three series.
The Tigers left nine runners on base and committed five errors in the game. Harvard scored five runs in six hits in the game.
The Tigers has a chance to score right off the bat in the first inning. Pat Boran and Eric Fitzgerald drew leadoff walks, but the Crimson got out of that jam when Adam Balkan struck out and Pat Boran was caught trying to steal third on the same play. Jon Miller walked but then Nyewide got Ryan Eldridge to strike out looking. Princeton scored its only run of the game when Ryan Reich ripped a double down the left field line to score Tim Lahey in the second inning. Lahey got on base with an infield single and then advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Harvard loaded the bases in the bottom of the third on an infield single and two errors. Trey Hendricks gave the Crimson a 2-1 lead with a two RBI single through the right side. The Tigers were able to get out of the inning and return a favor in the process. Ohlendorf struck out San Salvador and caught Faiz Shakir trying to steal third to close out the inning.
Javier Lopez stole home with one out in the fifth to give the Crimson a two-run cushion. Lopez opened the inning with a two run double down the left field line, and then advanced to third on a ground out to the shortstop.
Hendricks doubled to right to open the sixth inning. San Salvador walked and then both runners advanced on a balk. Pinch hitter Marc Hordon plated two more runs when his grounder got past Boran. The gave the Crimson a 5-1 lead that they would not relinquish.
Freshman Ross Ohlendorf got the start in the opening game for the Tigers. He gave five runs, only two of which were earned, over five innings. He faced four batters in the sixth and recorded six strikeouts. David Boehle came on in relief and threw the last three innings. He gave up just one hit and struck out five.
First pitch in game two is scheduled for 3:10 p.m.
