Princeton, N.J. - Fifteen different Tigers found the back of the net and 17 Tigers made the scoring column as Princeton manhandled Le Moyne in a first-round NCAA Championship contest at Class of 1952 Stadium on Thursday afternoon. The Tigers advance to round two with a 25-3 thrashing of the Dolphins.
Princeton flexed its muscles early and often with four goals in the game's first five minutes. Five different Tigers scored each of Princeton's first five goals, and at the 16:17 mark, Princeton led 11-0 with two goals apiece from senior Lauren Simone and junior Alex Fiore.
Le Moyne's leading scorer, Amanda Daniels, put the Dolphins on the board with a goal at 16:45, but freshman Lindsey Biles answered with a spectacular behind-the-back goal off an assist from sophomore Mary Beth Hogan to give the Tigers an 11-goal cushion that would only increase as the game continued. The Tigers scored twice more before the half and led 14-1 at the break. Princeton jumped out of the gate early in the second half with sophomore Elizabeth Pillion scoring only 18 seconds into the period. Simone assisted on Pillion's goal at 30:18 and again on Biles goal at 31:37. She then scored at 32:13 and Princeton moved out to a 17-1 advantage.
"We didn't take Le Moyne lightly," says Simone. "If we want to win a championship we have to come prepared and play our game."
The Tigers scored six more goals before Le Moyne scored its second goal of the game. After sophomore Julia Vinyard picked up her first career assist on sophomore Tara Hardiman's goal at 49:59, Daniels scored for Le Moyne and Princeton led 23-2. The Dolphins scored again at 56:24, but the final strike of the day came from freshman Jennifer Austin, who notched her first-career goal to seal the Tigers' and the game's scoring.
"I think what we saw today was the quality of this team all the way down the roster," says Princeton head coach Chris Sailer. "Our practices are competitive day in and day out and everyone on this team can play."
Princeton's domination was evident on the stats sheet with 38 shots compared to 11 by Le Moyne. The Tigers won 26 of 30 draw controls and picked up 24 ground balls to Le Moyne's 15. Princeton also entered the record books with the most goals ever scored in an NCAA tournament game, breaking the old record of 23 set by Maryland in last year's tournament.
Simone found herself in the record books as well. She tied a Princeton record for most assists in a game with five. Cristi Samara '99 and Melissa Cully '98 share the single-game record with Simone. The Tigers extended their record win streak to 16 games and tie the team record for most wins in a season with 16. Princeton's 25 goals moved the season goal total to 252, which is also a school record.
Biles led the Tigers with four goals and two assists while Simone ended the game with three goals and five assists. Fiore, Hardiman, Ingred Goldberg, Charlotte Kenworthy and Whitney Miller all scored two goals for Princeton. Austin, Mimi Hammerberg, Pillion, Sarah Small, Nina Carbone, Leigh Slonaker, Kim Smith and Katie Yakulis each finished the game with one goal. Hogan tallied four assists on a day where the Tigers totaled a season-high 19 assists as a team.
Freshman Sarah Kolodner and sophomore Meghan McInnis split time in goal. Each had three saves on the day. Kolodner is a perfect 15-0 when starting in goal for Princeton.
The Tigers, now 16-1 on the year, take the No. 1 ranking in the IWLCA Poll and the country's longest winning streak into Sunday afternoon's NCAA Quarterfinal match-up with Notre Dame. The Irish sport a 13-4 overall record after defeating Ohio State in today's first-round game at South Bend, Ind.
Princeton and Notre Dame will play at 2 p.m. this Sunday, May 12 at Class of 1952 Stadium on the campus of Princeton University. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
