NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - It was Rutgers' Senior Night but Princeton senior Gianfranco Tripicchio received recognition of his own as he scored his first collegiate goal in the 3-1 loss to the Scarlet Knights at Yurcak Field.
Tripicchio had started almost every game of his four years at midfield but was valued for his playmaking rather than his scoring. His first career goal came tonight when he scored 10 yards out on a cross by freshman Kyle McHugh, tying the score at 1-1 in the 43rd minute.
Rutgers got on the board first when senior Josh Gros scored his 13th goal of the season at 34:33 with a low shot past Bobby Guelich, who started in goal in place of the typical starter, Erik White. Princeton battled back and Rutgers raised its level of intensity, resulting in five yellow cards and one red card in the game. Rutgers head coach Bob Reasso was ejected from the game in the 39th minute for protesting a foul, and four minutes later the Tigers evened the match with Tripicchio's goal.
But the Scarlet Knights came out firing in the second half, outshooting Princeton 24-8 for the game. Junior Anthony Schiavino deked the Tiger defense and fired a hard shot past Guelich for the gamewinner in the 52nd minute and junior Chris Karcz added an insurance goal in the 67th minute for the 3-1 win.
Guelich had seven saves in his first start for Princeton, who falls to 4-6-3 overall.
The Tigers have two games this weekend beginning on Friday, Oct. 31 when they host Ivy League rival Cornell at 7:30 p.m. Princeton travels to Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday for a 2 p.m. matchup against the 12th-ranked team in the nation.
