PRINCETON, N.J. - The Princeton women's volleyball team has no margin for error in the Ivy League race, and despite an ugly first game, it stayed in the hunt with a 3-1 victory over Harvard Friday night at Dillon Gym.
Penn defeated Dartmouth 3-0 at the Palestra, keeping the top of the standings the same. Cornell defeated Yale to stay two back of Penn, while Princeton remains 1.5 back. Cornell can't control its own destiny, and a win by Penn tomorrow would eliminate the Big Red. Princeton does control its own destiny, and a win tomorrow against Dartmouth and Monday against Columbia would guarantee the Tigers a shot at the league title Wednesday night at Penn.
That control was but to the test against Harvard, especially early. A mistake-plagued opener helped Harvard to a 30-27 win, and the Crimson was two points away from making it a 2-0 lead, but Brittany Wood's solo block gave Princeton a 29-28 lead, and the Tigers killed the game on the next point to win it. Princeton cruised in the third game, but had to battle to claim the fourth. Timely hitting and solid defense by Jenny Senske and Jenny McReynolds helped Princeton to the 30-27 win.
Lauren Grumet led Princeton with 16 kills, while Kellie Cramm and Alex Brown had 14 kills. Senske had 51 assists, while McReynolds had 22 digs.
Nilly Schweitzer led Harvard with 19 kills, while Nathalie Miller had 14 kills and 20 digs.
Princeton will take on Dartmouth Saturday at 4 p.m.
