NASHVILLE - Becky Brown had a game-high 20 points and 11 Princeton players scored to lead the Tigers to an 84-58 win over Samford and a third place finish at the Vanderbilt Tournament in Memorial Gym. Princeton improved to 1-2 with its first win of the season.
Louisville, who defeated Princeton 68-61 yesterday, will play Vanderbilt in the championship game at 4 p.m. ET.
"This a great team effort," head coach Richard Barron said. "We got a tremendous performance from Brown in the first half and everyone was doing a great job of running the floor in offensive transition in the second half. It was a very good game in just about every aspect."
Princeton and Samford were even for the first 17 minutes of the game, which saw 16 lead changes and four ties until the Bulldogs took their final lead of the game, 36-35, with 3:08 remaining in the half. A Samford foul at 3:07 with Princeton in the bonus put Shelly Slemp on the line, where she hit one of two free throws to tie the score. The Tigers scored the next seven points to enter the break with a 43-36 lead, the biggest lead of the first half. Brown had 17 points and six rebounds at the half.
Princeton continued its run when it scored the first eight points of the second half and three three-pointers in the first five minutes of play. Samford scored its first field goal in nearly 10 minutes at 13:24 but Princeton surged to a 29-point lead - its biggest of the game - at 4:36 with a lay-up by Casey Lockwood.
Katy Digovich had 17 points and six rebounds while Lockwood had 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Katy O'Brien and Slemp tied for a game-high six assists and Slemp added five rebounds and three steals. Every player on the Princeton roster has scored at least once in its three games this season.
The Tigers shot 52 percent from the field and 58 percent behind the arc while holding Samford to just 35 percent shooting from field goal and three-point range. They outscored the Bulldogs 41-22 in the second half.
Digovich was named to the all-tournament team.
Princeton (1-2) has its first home game this Wednesday, Dec. 3 when it hosts Lehigh at 7 p.m. in Jadwin Gymnasium.
