NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Princeton women's volleyball team escaped a major upset attempt by the Columbia Lions and stayed in the Ivy League race with a 3-2 win. It got even better news later that night, when the Penn Quakers fell 3-2 at Cornell; Princeton is now one match back of the Quakers.
Princeton opened the match with 30-28 and 30-25 wins, but Columbia held off Princeton in the third game 30-28 and then earned a comfortable 30-24 win in the fourth game. The Tigers bounced back to stay in the league race with a 15-10 win in the finale.
Lauren Grumet led the Princeton attack with 23 kills, while Alex Brown added 16 kills. Jenny McReynolds led the defensive effort with 29 digs, while Jenny Senske contributed 65 assists.
Princeton is now one match back of Penn, which fell 3-2 at Cornell Friday. Princeton and Cornell will meet Saturday, with the winner having the best chance of unseating the Quakers for the Ivy League title. If Princeton wins its next three matches, it will have a chance to clinch at least a share of the league title in the season finale at The Palestra.
