Final Stats
PRINCETON, N.J. - Katy O'Brien swished four three-pointers and finished with 15 points, four assists and six steals in Princeton's 55-49 loss to Hofstra in Hempstead, N.Y. The Tigers led with 2:28 to play but did not score again, falling to 1-5 overall this season.
The Tigers opened with a full-court press but it was the Pride's contained zone that applied the greater pressure as Hofstra converted 10 Princeton turnovers into 14 points. Lizanne Murphy scored the first eight points for the Pride, who took an early 8-2 lead.
Backup center Maureen McCracken sparked Princeton with back-to-back points in the paint and O'Brien hit two threes to keep the Tigers in the game. A three-pointer by Ali Smith off the bench at 6:35 and another by O'Brien at 5:29 gave Princeton its first lead, 21-18, since its 2-0 start to the game. The Tigers overthrew two passes to backcourt cutters and Hofstra turned those turnovers into six points with back-to-back three-pointers to end the half ahead, 31-27.
O'Brien and Hofstra's Urszula Smolarek each had nine points off three three-pointers at the break, while freshman Casey Lockwood had five defensive rebounds and four assists.
In the second half, Princeton scored the first seven points and took a 34-31 lead when O'Brien hit her fourth three at 16:05. The Pride stayed in the game with Amaka Agugua's eight points in the paint and Princeton battled back behind six points from Becky Brown in the post. Brown hit two free throws at 2:28 to put the Tigers ahead 49-48 for the last time.
Hofstra's Shalamar Oakley quickly regained the lead (50-49) for the Pride with two slicing moves though the lane. A missed front end of a one-and-one, a turnover and a missed shot kept Princeton scoreless for three possessions and a foul put the Pride on the line with 0:46 to play.
Hofstra, who shot 1 for 5 from the foul line in the first 19 minutes of the second half, made 5 of 6 free throws in the final minute.
Brown finished with 12 points off 5-for-8 shooting while Lockwood had team-highs of five assists and eight rebounds, all defensive. The Tigers, who entered the game shooting 39% from the field and 38% from behind the arc, shot just 32% from the field and made only 1 of 9 three-pointers in the second half. They finished shooting 37% from the floor and 29% from three-point range.
For the Pride, Agugua finished with 14 points, including 10 in the second half, while Lana Harshaw added 12 points, eight in the second half.
Princeton falls to 1-5 overall as it enters a three-game home stretch. The Tigers host Wagner on Wed., Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. before the ACC's Georgia Tech and Wake Forest come to town next weekend.
