Providence, R.I. - The Princeton women's hockey team fell to Dartmouth 3-2 in the second semifinal of the ECAC Championship Saturday afternoon at Brown's Meehan Auditorium. Down 3-1 in the third, Andrea Kilbourne scored to move the Tigers within a goal, but Dartmouth tightened up its defense to hold on for a 4-2 win after adding an empty-netter. Princeton completed its season at 20-9-4, making it the most successful season in the program's history. Princeton's previous record for wins in a season was 17, set in the 1994-95 season.
"Dartmouth is a deep and talented team and each of our three games with them has been a chess match," said Princeton coach Jeff Kampersal. "We had our chances but were a little tentative early and that cost us. But as much as the loss hurts, losing our four seniors hurts more. As good as they are on the ice, they're better people off the ice." Dartmouth skated strong in the opening period and jumped ahead 1-0 at 6:42 when Krista Dornfried pounced on a loose puck and backhanded it over Princeton goaltender Megan Van Beusekom as she dove to cover it up. Amy Catlin and Sarah Clark picked up assists on Dornfried's seventh goal of the season.
Princeton fought back and evened the score at 1-1 at 10:11. Lisa Rasmussen worked the puck deep in the Big Green zone and centering pass towards the crease where Sarah Butsch redirected it over Dartmouth netminder Amy Ferguson for her sixth of the season. Rasmussen and Susan Hobson assisted the power-play goal.
The Big Green wasted little time in re-establishing the lead as they scored a power-play goal of their own at 12:08. Corenne Bredin fed a wide-open Cherie Piper in front of the Tiger net and Piper netted her 16th of the season to give Dartmouth the 2-1 lead.
Dartmouth took a two-goal lead with a goal early in the second period of play when Tiffany Hagge poked the puck into the goal. Van Beusekom thought that she had the puck covered, but it was loose behind her in the crease and Hagge beat the Princeton defenders to it. Carly Haggard and Katie Weatherston posted assists.
Princeton clawed back within a goal at 7:28 of the third period when Andrea Kilbourne scored her 18th goal of the season. Nikola Holmes carried the puck into the Dartmouth zone and fed Kilbourne in the slot. Kilbourne then corralled the puck and wristed a shot that beat Ferguson through the five-hole. Gretchen Anderson also added an assist on the goal.
Kilbourne, playing in her final game in a Princeton jersey, graduates as the best player to ever play for the Tigers.
"I am so proud to be a part of this team," said Kilbourne. "This season we showed a lot of people how good of a team we are. We didn't have a lot of big names but we were a good team. The sum total is always better than the parts that make it up and that's our team."
