Charlottesville, Va. - Princeton controlled six draws in a game of 21 goals and came up on the short end of a 13-8 decision at Virginia on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers battled back-and-forth throughout the entire first half, but a second-half surge by the Cavaliers resulted in Princeton's second loss of the season.
Seniors Whitney Miller and Alex Fiore combined for five of Princeton's eight goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Kolodner registered 10 saves, but Virginia ended the game with 33 shots to Princeton's 15 and led the entire way.
After the Cavaliers opened the game with a score, Miller answered for Princeton. Virginia went up 2-1 and senior Sarah Small answered with her second goal of the season. The Cavs went up 3-2 and once again, the Tigers answered. Sophomore Lindsey Biles scored at 19:30 to tie things up at 3-3. Virginia would close out the half with three unanswered and opened the second stanza with another goal making the score 7-4. After three more Virginia goals and Miller's second goal of the game, the score was 10-5.
Princeton mustered a rally with back-to-back goals from Fiore and Miller, forcing Virginia to take a time-out with a three-goal lead. The Cavaliers, however, were able to hold on and Princeton dropped its second straight contest for the first time since the 2001 season.
The Tigers, ranked No. 2 in the national polls, fall to 1-2 overall and head further south to take on the Blue Devils of Duke this Wednesday, March 19. Virginia, ranked No. 8, improves to 5-2 on the year.
