Box Score
Durham, N.C. - Princeton registered more ground balls, caused more turnovers, had fewer fouls and took the same amount of shots but finished on the short end of the scoreboard and dropped an 8-4 decision to Duke in Durham, N.C. on Wednesday. Senior Rachael Becker had five ground balls and five caused turnovers but it wasn't enough to prevent loss number three for the Orange and Black.
Junior Theresa Sherry scored her sixth goal of the season only five minutes in and Princeton led 1-0. Duke's Kate Kaiser tied up the score 1:14 later and the Tigers answered with senior Sarah Small, who took a pass from sophomore Elizabeth Pillion to take back a one-goal lead. It would be Princeton's last lead of the game. Duke scored three unanswered to close out the first half with a 4-2 lead. Katie Chrest, who scored the last Blue Devil goal of the first half, scored Duke's first two goals of the second half, both goals coming off of free-position attempts.
Pillon and junior Katie Yakulis each scored in the second half while goalkeeper Sarah Kolodner finished the game with six saves. Senior Whitney Miller picked up five ground balls and also caused a turnover.
"We definitely played better than we did on Sunday [vs. Virginia]" says Princeton coach Chris Sailer. "We had good opportunities to score, we just didn't execute."
Despite its 1-3 overall record, Princeton has only been outscored by one goal this season. The Tigers three losses were against teams currently ranked No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 in the national polls.
"I saw some good signs in today's game," says Sailer. "We stepped up our defensive presence in the second half; we did a lot of things right. I'm just looking forward to getting back to New Jersey and getting ready for Penn State."
The Tigers return to New Jersey and begin a three-game homestand this Saturday at 2 p.m. when Penn State visits Class of 1952 Stadium.
