Chapel Hill, N.C. - The Princeton baseball team allowed 13 runs over the last two inning as the Tigers fell to North Carolina 24-12 Wednesday afternoon at UNC's Boshamer Stadium. Princeton's offense was led by freshman Andy Salini, who belted a three-run homer and added two additional RBIs on a 2-for-4 afternoon.
Princeton began the game by scoring a run in the top of the first inning. Steve Young hit a leadoff single and advanced to third when B.J. Szymanski singled to center field. Young then scored on a sacrifice fly to right field off the bat of Jon Miller. Ryan Eldridge was the next to bat and he hit a fielder's choice to reach first. The next two batters, Adam Balkan and Will Venable each drew walks to bring Andy Salini up with the bases loaded. Salini singled to left field, scoring Eldridge and Balkan, to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead. Princeton continued its strong offensive inning when Stephen Wendell drew a walk to load the bases. Mike Chernoff then ripped a double to right field that cleared the bases and gave Princeton a 6-0 lead. Venable played in his first game for the Tiger this season as the team's designated hitter. He joined the team this week in North Carolina upon the completion of the men's basketball season.
The Tar Heels used a three-run third and five-run fifth to claim an 8-5 lead, but Princeton answered back with four runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to reclaim a 12-8 lead. The fifth was highlighted by Salini's three-run blast to center field.
North Carolina stormed back with 16 runs over the final three innings to take the 24-12 victory.
Bill Broome took the loss for Princeton and is now 0-1 while UNC's Kevin Brower picked up the victory.
The Tigers are now 2-10 and continue their spring break road trip tomorrow afternoon when they visit Liberty at 1 p.m.
