Box Score
Williamsburg, Va. - Ryan Eldridge's no-out double in the top of the 10th inning scored Jon Miller to give Princeton a 7-6 win Friday night Plumeri Park. It was Princeton's third win of the season.
Princeton pitcher Bill Broome, the third of three Tigers to pitch, improved to 1-1 on the year after working the final inning and two-thirds without giving up a hit or a run while striking out two batters. Joe Roenker dropped to 0-2 after giving up the winning run in the tenth.
The Tribe grabbed an early 3-0 lead after scoring three times in the first inning. Mitch Walk opened the scoring when he launched his third homer of the year over the right field wall. Tim Jones and Michael Brown followed with back-to-back singles, and then both men moved up one base after stealing them. Will Rhymes brought Jones home when he legged out an infield single, and Brown came home right behind him after John Lentz stroked a single to center. The Tigers began to chip away at W&M's lead, picking up a run in the second on Tim Lahey's team-leading third homerun of the season, and adding another in the third when B.J. Szymanski doubled home Steve Young to make the score 3-2.
The score stayed at 3-2 until Princeton scored four runs in the top of the sixth. With one out, Szymanski tripled to center field. A batter and an out later, Eldridge drew a walk, followed by a double to right by Lahey that scored both runners. Adam Balkan then singled up the middle to score Lahey. Following a pitching change, Stephen Wendell was hit by a pitch, then Eric Fitzgerald lofted a double to left to score Balkan and give the Tigers a 6-3 lead. All four runs came with two outs on the board.
The Tribe closed the gap to 6-4 after scoring one run in the eighth. Rhymes led off with a double to center, moved over to third on Lentz's groundout to short, and scored when Trey Wakefield hit a single down the left field line.
Down 6-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth, the Tribe rallied to force extra innings. Ben Keeton led off with a double to the gap in right, advanced to third on Walk's flyout to right, and scored on Jones' doublle to left-center. Jeff Lunardi was inserted into the lineup to pinch run for Jones, and that was followed by an intentional walk to Brown. Princeton coach Scott Bradley then called to the bullpen and brought in Broome. Broome got the first batter to pop up for the second out of the inning.
Yancey Jones came to the plate to pinch hit for Rhymes, and he belted a grounder to third that was misplayed and allowed Lunardi to score from second for the tying run. Brown advanced to third on the throw.
With Brown representing the winning run at third base, Lentz flied out to left on a 1-0 pitch to send the game into extra innings.
Princeton wasted no time getting its run across. Miller looped a leadoff single to center, and scored on the next pitch when Eldridge blasted a double to the gap in right center for the winning run.
Broome set the Tribe down in order in the bottom half of the tenth to preserve the 7-6 win.
Szymanski led the way for the Tigers, going 4-for-5 with a triple, two doubles and an RBI, while Lahey went 2-for-5 with three RBIs, a homerun and a double.
The two teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader, which gets underway at 1:00.
