KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Erin Snyder led Princeton through four perfect innings and Kristin Lueke went 3 for 4 with two runs as the Tigers defeated the University of Tennessee 6-0 in Game 1 at Tyson Park.
Princeton dominated from the start when leadoff batter Kristin Lueke singled and advanced to second off a sacrifice bunt by Lindsay Motal. Melissa Finley ripped into left field to bring Lueke home before the inning ended 1-0 in the Tigers' favor.
Cristina Cobb-Adams kept the momentum in the top of the second when she doubled and eventually scored on a stolen-base attempt by Wendy Bingham. Freshman pitcher Erin Snyder did her part on the mound by allowing no hits heading into the third. Lueke earned her second hit of the game with a grounder past the short stop to open the third before Tennessee's starting pitcher Stacey Jennings, who leads the Lady Vols with a 1.60 ERA in 100 innings, was relieved by freshman Christy Anch. In a repeat of the first-inning play, Motal sacrificed another bunt that moved Lueke to second. Lueke stole third with two outs but was left on base when Finley popped out to right field.
After another no-hit inning by Snyder, Lueke got her third hit in three attempts when she ripped a single into right field in the top of the fifth. Motal followed with a hit through the short stop's glove that put her on second and scored Lueke. But despite two outs, the inning was just beginning for the Tigers. Del Calvo and Finley scored back-to-back homers, season-firsts for both, that turned Princeton's one-run edge into a dominating 6-0 lead.
Snyder allowed her only hit of the game in the bottom of the fifth when Amber Rhinehart grounded to third baseman Amanda Erickson for a single. The Tigers' defense held Tennessee scoreless and Princeton finished ahead, 6-0.
Snyder earned her first collegiate win as the Tigers moved to 2-3 overall.
