Baseball Splits Double Header at WIlliam & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Princeton baseball team took advantage of five William and Mary defensive errors to defeat the Tribe 11-8 in game one, but the Tribe scored four of its six runs in the final three innings of game two, including a walkoff double by Mitch Walk with one out in the ninth as the Tribe earned the doubleheader split with a 6-5 win in the nightcap. Princeton is now 4-11 this season.
In game one, the Tribe opened the scoring in the third inning with a pair of runs. Walk laced a one-out single to right, moved over to second on a groundout, advanced to third on an error, and scored on Tim Jones's single to left. After C.J. Stimson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Will Rhymes was hit by a pitch that scored Michael Brown to give W&M a 2-0 lead.
Princeton responded with three runs in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead on Andy Salini's second home run of the season. The three-run blast scored B.J. Szymanski and Jon Miller. The lead was shortlived however as the Tribe answered right back to tie the score at three. But the Princeton bats came alive again in the next inning, as it scored three more runs, taking advantage of a Tribe error to take a 6-3 lead. The inning was highlighted by a RBI-triple by Szymanski and an RBI-single from Salini.
W&M cut it to one run with two runs in the fifth, but the Tigers again responded by scoring five runs over the next two innings to take an 11-5 lead.
Princeton starter Ryan Quilllian improved to 1-2 after striking out five batters in six innings of work. Mark Siano closed the game and picked up his first save of the year.
In game two, the Tribe again jumped out to an early lead, when Walk scored on a wild pitch in the first inning after he reached third on an error.
The Tigers took its first lead of the game after scoring lone runs in the second and third, and exploded for three runs in the fourth to expand its lead to 5-1. The inning was highlighted by Tim Lahey's team-leading fourth homerun of the seaosn.
Down 5-1, the Tribe scored one run in the fifth to close the lead to 5-2, and would tie the game with three runs in the seventh.
Tied at five in the ninth, the Tribe plated one run to win. Padgett notched a leadoff single down the leftfield line, and moved over to second on John Rhymes's sacrifice bunt. Walk then hit the first offering from reliever Erik Stiller into the gap in left center, scoring Padgett with the winning run.
Stiller was charged with the loss after giving up four runs on four hits in three and one-thirds innings of work.
The fourth and final game of the series gets underway tomorrow afternoon at 1:00.
