PRINCETON, N.J. - Melissa Finley pitched her first complete win of the season and gave up just one walk in the Tigers 4-2 victory of Monmouth at 1895 Field. It was the first home game for Princeton, who improves to 4-9 overall.
Cristina Cobb-Adams led off a scoring binge in the second inning when she walked to first and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Amanda Erickson. Kristin Lueke singled and reached second on the throw, putting Cobb-Adams in position to score. Nicole Davida walked to load the bases before Wendy Bingham singled to third base and scored Cobb-Adams to gain a 1-0 advantage. The Tigers quickly increased their lead when Finley was hit by the pitch, scoring Lueke, and when Davida stole home after a fly out to right field by catcher Ty Ries. Princeton led 3-0 at the end of the second.
Before the Hawks got on the board, the Tigers managed another run. Kristin Del Calvo, who finished the game 2 for 3 with one run, doubled to right field in the third inning and advanced to third when Cobb-Adams grounded out. Lueke got her second hit of the game when she singled to right field and brought home Del Calvo.
Monmouth, down 4-0, fought back in the seventh when it earned three of its six hits and scored its only two runs of the game. Amanda Smith and Ashley Dellens hit back-to-back singles and scored on a fielder's choice and on one of Princeton's two errors of the game.
Princeton senior Kelly Baril, a first-year player on the softball team, caught a fly to left field for the last out of the game.
The Tigers, now 4-9 overall, are back on the road this weekend when they visit Fairfax, Virginia for the George Mason Invitational. Their first game is against George Mason at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
