Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton baseball team split a double header with Vermont Saturday afternoon at Clarke Field. Princeton won the opener 6-2 behind a complete game outing from pitcher Ryan Quillian and a two-run home run from from DH Tim Lahey. Vermont rallied with three runs in the top of the ninth to top Princeton 4-2 in the second game.
In the opener Quillian earned his second win of the season and lowered his ERA to 2.88 after scattering five hits and two runs. After each team produced a run in the first inning, the Tigers took control of the game in the third when they tallied four runs. Steve Young led off with a walk, he then stole second base and scored when B.J. Szymanski reached third on an error by the right fielder. Jon Miller then lined a grounder off the leg of the third baseman, scoring Szymanski and allowing him to reach third. The next batter was Tim Lahey and he belted a his sixth home run over the season well over the right field fence to give Princeton a 5-1 lead. Vermont chipped one run off the lead in the fourth but Princeton got the run right back when Eric Fitzgerald homered along the right field line. It was his first home run of the season.
In the second game, Princeton jumped on top with two runs in the first inning. Fitzgerald reached base on an error and advanced to second on a single by Szymanski. After two outs and a double steal, both runners scored when Andy Salini lined a pitch right up the middle.
Vermont climbed within one in the top of the second when Jason Iannoni homered to right. The score remained 2-1 through the next six innings until Vermont rallied to take the lead in the ninth. With two outs in the inning, pinch hitter Kyle Brault hit a home run to left to even the score up. Vermont then scored twice on Jeff Barry's two-RBI double.
Vermont starting pitcher Jamie Merchant set the side down in order in the bottom of the ninth to seal the victory.
These same two teams meet again tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Clarke Field.
