Ithaca, N.Y. - The Princeton men's baseball team improved to 5-1 in the Ivy League after sweeping Dartmouth earlier today at Cornell's Hoy Field. In the opener Princeton manufactured a run in the top of the eighth inning to earn a 6-5 extra innings win, and in the nightcap, the Tigers pushed 15 runs across the plate to post a 15-5 win. The sweep lifted Princeton to 12-15 overall.
The series was moved from Dartmouth's field to Cornell due to poor field conditions in Hanover, N.H. The Big Green was considered the home team in both games.
In the opening game Princeton jumped to an early 1-0 lead with a run in the first. Steve Young led off with a walk and advanced to third on B.J. Szymanski's single through the right side. The next batter, Jon Miller, grounded into a double play, but it was enough to score Young and put the Tigers on top. Princeton added two more runs in the top of the third inning thanks to a two-run homerun off the bat of Miller. The homer to right center scored Szymanski who had reached on a single. Dartmouth answered back in the bottom-half of the third with four runs to take a 4-3 lead which it held through the next three innings.
As usual in the Ivy League, the opening game was scheduled to be seven innings. Down a run, the Tiger bat came alive in the seventh. Mike Chernoff led off with a single to left field. Princeton then replaced him with Eric Fitzgerald as a pinch runner. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Young and scored when the following batter, Szymanski, belted a two-run homer to right center.
Now it was Dartmouth's turn to answer and the Big Green posted a run in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings. Princeton wasted little time and added a run in the eighth to win the game. With Will Venable on first with two outs, Matthew Becker drew a walk to move Venable to second. Young then singled through the left side to scored Venable and give the Tigers a 6-5 win.
The win was Princeton's third extra innings win in as many attempts this season. Ross Ohlendorf made his first start since the spring break trip after rehabbing an injury and allowed four runs over five innings while striking out six. Bill Broome pitched a perfect inning of relief and Thomas Pauly earned his fourth win of the season after pitching the final two innings.
The second game of the day started well for Princeton as the Tigers posted four runs in the opening at-bat. With two outs, Miller singled through the right side. The next batter, Tim Lahey singled, moving Miller to third. Andy Salini then singled through the left side to score both runners. Salini stole second and made it home when Ryan Reich launched a home run to left field.
The Tigers added to their lead in the third inning with three additional runs to make the score 7-1. Szymanski singled through the left side to lead off. He advanced to second when Lahey walked. Following a double-steal and a groundout, Reich came to bat and belted his second home run in as many at bats.
Dartmouth chipped two runs off the Tiger lead through the middle innings, but Princeton added eight runs over the last three innings to ice the win. Princeton's final two runs came in the ninth thanks to a two-run blast from Lahey. It was Lahey's team-leading 7th home run this season.
Princeton starter David Boehle allowed four runs over six innings to improve to 2-1 on the season. Brian Biegen pitched the final three innings and recorded a save.
Princeton looks to continue its strong play tomorrow afternoon when the Tigers travel to Cambridge to meet Harvard. The double header begins at 12 noon.
