Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton men's baseball team climbed to the .500 mark with a 5-3 win over Seton Hall Tuesday afternoon at Clarke Field. Ryan Reich's two-RBI single in the seventh inning broke a 3-3 tie and spurred the Tigers to their eighth consecutive win. Princeton is now 15-15 overall.
The Tigers jumped ahead early with a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Andy Salini led off with a walk and advanced two bases to third when Seton Hall pitcher Ben Grams' pickoff attempt sailed past the first baseman. Stephen Wendell then registered an infield single that hit the third base bag to score Salini and put Princeton ahead.
The Pirates took a lead of their own in the fourth when they posted two runs. They extended the lead to 3-1 in the sixth when Casey Grimm nailed his fourth home run of the season over the right field wall. Princeton wasted little time to answer back, rallying to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. Adam Balkan led off with a leadoff single through the right side. Ryan Reich then doubled down the left field line to advance Balkan to third. After an out, Zach Wendkos put a hard grounder just inside the third base bag that turned into a double for him and scored both runners to know the game at three runs apiece.
The scored did not stay tied for long as Princeton added two more runs in it's following at bat to take the 5-3 lead. Jon Miller led off with a single through the right side and moved to second when Salini drew a walk. Balkan then attempted a sacrifice bunt, but beat out the throw from the third baseman for an infield single that loaded the bases. The next batter was Reich who drove a single through the left side to score both Miller and Salini. Seton Hall was able to get out of the inning, but the damage had been done as Princeton held on for the win.
Princeton's starter Erik Stiller struck out three and allowed no earned runs over four innings. Nate Miller pitched the next two innings and struck out four batters. Aaron Herr then came in the seventh and go two outs before Worth Lumry came in. Lumry ended the seventh and pitched into the ninth and was credited with his second win of the season. With a man on in the ninth, Bill Broome came in for the final three outs and recorded his second save of the year.
Princeton returns to its Ivy league schedule on Friday and Saturday with a pair of doubleheaders at Penn. Saturday's game at noon will be televised live on CN8.
