Baseball Unloads On Monmouth Pitching; Claims 14-9 Win

Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton baseball team's bats came alive Tuesday afternoon at Clarke Field as the Tigers tallied 14 runs on 20 hits to defeat Monmouth 14-9. Princeton broke a 4-4 tie with a 10-run sixth inning, which was highlighted by Tim Lahey's 10th home run of the season, a gigantic blast over the shrubs in left center. Princeton is now 19-16 on the season.
Princeton spotted a run to Monmouth in the top of the first before Jon Miller singled home Steve Young home to knot the score at one after one inning of play. Monmouth jumped on top again in the third, but Princeton evened the score up in the fourth when Mark Grayson scored on a single from Mike Chernoff. The Tigers added two more runs in the fifth to go ahead 4-2. B.J. Szymanski tripled with one out and scored on a single from Miller. After another out, Will Venable singled through the left side to score Miller. Monmouth scored twice in the sixth to even the score up before Princeton put 10 runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning. In all 15 batters came to the plate for Princeton as the Tigers batted around the lineup for only the second time this season. Grayson led off with a single down the left line. Chernoff then reached on a fielder's choice and Grayson moved to second on an error by the pitcher. Eric Fitzgerald then tripled to left center to clear the bases and plate two runs. Next Steve Young singled through the right side to score Fitzgerald. The next two batters, Szymanski and Miller singled to load the bases for the clean-up hitter, Lahey. Princeton's home run leader turned on a 2-2 pitch and drove it well over the fence to clear the bases and put Princeton ahead 10-4.
Venable then came to bat and took first after being hit in the back by a pitch. Stephen Wendell then reached on a fielding error. After a fly out advanced Venable, Chernoff singled down the line in left to scored Venable. Chernoff went to second on the play and scored the Tigers' final run of the inning when a grounder by Fitzgerald went through the second baseman's legs.
Monmouth clawed back and put five runs on the board in the eighth but that was as far as the Hawks got as Princeton posted its fourth win in a row and 12th out of the last 13 games.
Princeton used five pitchers on the day with Brian Biegen notching the win to become 2-1 on the season. Erik Stiller started and pitched three innings and allowed no earned runs. Jason Vaughan pitched the fourth and fifth, giving up three hits and striking out one. Biegen pitched the sixth and seventh with Worth Lumry and Matt Sullivan working the final two.
Princeton returns to action on Saturday at noon when the Tigers meet Columbia in Ivy League action at Clarke Field.
