Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton baseball team defeated St. John's tonight 7-4 at the Ball Park At St. John's. Princeton batted through the order in the fourth inning to score six runs and establish a lead it would not relinquish. Erik Stiller struck out eight batters over six innings and Tim Lahey and Matthew Becker each posted two RBIs.
The Tigers spotted the Red Storm a two-run lead in the third inning on a two-run home run from Marc Wagner. However the lead was short-lived as Princeton connected for six runs in the next inning.
B.J. Szymanski led off the inning by legging out an infield single and he moved to third base on a single from Jon Miller. The next pitch was wild and it brought Szymanski home and moved Miller to second base. Lahey then came up and put Princeton ahead with his 11th home run of the season. The two-run shot cleared the fence in right-center. Will Venable then laced a double along the left field line and scored when Ryan Reich singled through the right side and advanced to second on the throw. Mike Chernoff then hit an infield single that did not advance Reich. With runners on first and second, Becker came to bat and hit a double to dead center that landed at the foot of the wall and cleared the bases scoring both runs.
Eric Fitzgerald added the final Princeton run, a solo home run, in the ninth inning. It was Fitzgerald's third homer of the season.
St. John's added additional runs in the sixth and eighth innings but could not draw even with the Tigers as Princeton posted the 22nd win of the season. Stiller was credited with the win, the first of his collegiate career. Jason Vaughan and Brian Biegen pitched over the final two innings.
Princeton returns to action Friday afternoon for a double header against Big Red of Cornell. Princeton needs one win in its weekend series to clinch the Ivy League's Gehrig Division.
