Cambridge, Mass. - The Princeton men's baseball team completed an unconventional Ivy weekend sweep with a pair of wins at Harvard on Monday afternoon. The Tigers claimed the opener 5-1 and won the second game 2-0. The wins, coupled with a pair of wins yesterday against Dartmouth, lift the Tigers to 14-15 overall and 7-1 in the conference.
In the opener, Princeton jumped out to a 3-0 lead after scoring a run in the third and two runs in the fourth inning. With two outs in the third, B.J. Szymanski drew a walk and advanced to third on an error by the Harvard pitcher. Jon Miller then drilled a double to center field to score Szymanski and put the Tigers on top.
In the following inning, Tim Lahey reached on an infield hit with one out. He advanced to second when Will Venable reached on an error. The runners then advanced as Matthew Becker walked. With the bases loaded, Steve Young singled to score Lahey. The bases remained loaded for Szymanski who drew his second walk of the game to force Venable home. With a 3-1 lead, the Tigers added two more runs for insurance in the seventh inning. Young led off with a single up the middle and moved to second on a walk by Szymanski. Young was then thrown out attempting to steal third, but a walk by Ryan Eldridge moved Szymanski to second. Andy Salini then doubled to center field to score both runners and give Princeton the 5-1 win. Ryan Quillian worked six innings allowing one run on four hits and striking out six batters. He now leads all Princeton starters with three wins. Thomas Pauly pitched the final inning and struck out two batters.
The second game was a pitcher's duel that the Tigers took by a score of 2-0. Mark Siano started for Princeton and allowed three hits through 6.1 innings of work. He also struck out four to improve to 2-1. Pauly came in for the final 2.2 innings and notched five strikeouts for his second save of the season.
Princeton scored what turned out to be the only run it needed in the fourth inning. Szymanski led off with a single and he moved to second on an error on Jon Miller's fielder's choice. After a double steal, Szymanski came home on a passed ball to put Princeton on top 1-0. The Tigers added an insurance run in the top of the ninth to seal their seventh consecutive win. Eldridge led off the inning and reached on an error. He was the pinch run for by Adam Balkan. Balkan advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and went to third on a ground out. Mike Chernoff then hit an infield single that scored Balkan.
After playing eight straight league games, the Tigers take a break from the Ivy League schedule when they host Seton Hall tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. at Clarke Field.
