PRINCETON, N.J. - Cristina Cobb-Adams went 2 for 3 with three runs and four RBIs and Erin Snyder pitched a two-hit shutout in Princeton's 8-0 rout of Lehigh in the first game of a doubleheader at 1895 Field. The Tigers dropped the second game, 5-4, in ten innings.
Princeton opened the day with its first four batters reaching base. Lehigh's Jenny Bender walked Kristin Lueke, Wendy Bingham singled, and Cobb-Adams ripped a triple into leftfield to bring home the first two runs. Melissa Finley's grounder up the middle scored Cobb-Adams and gave the Tigers a quick 3-0 lead in the first. In the third, Princeton got on the board again when Cobb-Adams reached first on a fielder's choice that put Bingham out at second. Cobb-Adams stole second and scored off a double by Snyder, increasing Princeton's lead to 4-0 after three.
The Tigers put the game away in the fourth when they scored four runs off five hits and two Lehigh errors. Nicole Davida singled to the shortstop, Lueke reached second with a bunt and error at third, and Bingham hit a single that scored Davida and advanced Lueke to third. Cobb-Adams then doubled into leftfield for two RBIs before Finley brought her home with her second hit of the day. Princeton led 8-0 after four and held its lead to end the game in the fifth with the mercy rule.
In the second game, Lehigh scored first after two innings without a run. Second baseman Edoho Awaih pinch-ran for Kerry Kleiwer, who reached first with a single to leftfield. A sacrifice bunt by Erin Hengemuhle sent Awaih to second before Shana Treon brought her home with a single to rightfield.
Princeton responded immediately when Cobb-Adams earned her fifth RBI of the day with a double that scored Bingham, who reached base on an error in centerfield. The score was briefly tied, 1-1, after three.
Bender doubled to open the fourth for the Mountain Hawks, and then scored on the next play when Mary Wieder singled to first base. Princeton took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth on a double by Davida that scored Amanda Erickson and Ty Ries, but the Mountain Hawks tied it again in the sixth with back-to-back doubles by Jessica Young and Kliewer.
Neither team scored again until the International Substitution Rule was enforced in the tenth. With a runner on second, Lehigh seized the opportunity and scored two runs. Hengemuhle and Treon each hit a single to put the Mountain Hawks up 5-3 with one last chance remaining for Princeton.
The Tigers also took advantage of the tie-breaker rule, which put Davida on second to start the inning. Bingham and Cobb-Adams each singled to help score Davida, but the one run was all Princeton could manage. After ten, Lehigh went home with the 5-4 win.
Princeton is now 15-11-1 and an undefeated 5-0 in the Ivy League. The Tigers travel for more league action this weekend, when they face Cornell on Friday at 12 p.m. and Columbia on Saturday at 1 p.m.
