Philadelphia, Pa. - The Princeton baseball team swept Penn to complete a 3-1 weekend at Murphy Field. The Tigers won the opener 3-0 behind a three-hit complete game from Ryan Quillian. In the second game, Mark Siano and Thomas Pauly allowed a combined eight hits and two runs. Also in the second game, Will Venable hit his first career home run, a solo shot to right-center that cleared the 50-foot netting and landed on the exit ramp off of I-76.
Princeton is now 18-16 overall and 10-2 in the Ivy League. The Tigers are now four games ahead of Penn in the loss column in the race for the Gehrig Division title. The second game can be seen tape-delayed on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. on CN8. The opening game was a pitcher's duel that went the Tigers way. Quillian was in command from start to finish as he struck out eight and allowed no walks. In total, he only allowed three base runners in the game as he posted his fourth win this season. The 1:21 game was the shortest the Tigers have played this season.
Princeton got the only run it would need in the third inning. With two outs, Mike Chernoff walked on four straight pitches and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Steve Young then singled to left field to bring Chernoff home. The Tigers added two insurance runs in the fifth inning. With one out, Venable singled to right field. Adam Balkan drew a walk followed by a fielder's choice by Chernoff, which left Venable on third and Chernoff on first. That brought up Young and for the second time on the day, he ripped a single. Venable scored easily and Chernoff made it home on a throwing error by the center fielder.
In Game 2, Princeton took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning. With two outs, Young bunted for a base hit and moved to third when B.J. Szymanski singled to center. Jon Miller followed it up with another single to left field to score Young and put Princeton ahead.
After allowing Penn to tie up the game in the bottom of the third, Princeton regained the 2-1 lead in the fourth inning when Venable connected with his long ball. Princeton extended its lead to 4-1 with runs in the seventh and eighth innings. In the seventh, Tim Lahey led off with a double to the wall in left center. He advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a Chernoff single. Princeton moved ahead 4-1 in the eighth when Ryan Eldridge hit a solo home run to right field. It was his first of the season and second of his career.
Siano pitched the first five innings and allowed one runs on four hits while striking out one and is now 3-1. Pauly pitched the final four innings, recording six strikeouts and picking up his third save of the season.
Princeton returns to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon at home when the Tigers meet up with Monmouth at 3 p.m. The teams met earlier this season at Monmouth, a game won by the Tigers 2-0.
