NEW YORK, N.Y. - A day after hitting five home runs and scoring 16 runs in two seven-inning games, Princeton went scoreless for 15 innings and dropped the first game to Columbia, 1-0, but rebounded to win the second, 1-0, in an Ivy League doubleheader at Columbia Softball Complex.
The first game was a battle of freshman aces, Princeton's Erin Snyder (9-6) and Columbia's Jackie Adelfio (8-2), who each struck out 13 batters and allowed no runs until the bottom of the 15th inning. Until then, Columbia only had one base runner get further than first, and none reached third.
The Tigers were in scoring positions several times throughout the game, beginning in the fourth inning. Wendy Bingham hit a high line into left center, Cristina Cobb-Adams advanced her to second with a sacrifice bunt, Melissa Finley walked, and a put-out of Erin Snyder helped runners reach second and third. But that was as close as Princeton could get before Amanda Erickson grounded out to third to end the inning with two runners left on. The Tigers also had an active sixth inning when Bingham walked and Cobb-Adams singled to the outfield, but Adeflio earned the last out with another strikeout. In the seventh, Erickson popped up to third but a fielding error let her reach first. Freshman Sarah Murphy came in to pinch run and a sacrifice bunt by Ty Ries advanced her to second, but two quick outs stranded Murphy on second and left the game scoreless as it entered the bottom of the seventh.
Princeton loaded the bases in the eighth when Lueke, Bingham, and Finley hit three straight singles before Snyder, who hit her first grand slam yesterday, stepped to the plate with one out on the board. Adelfio recorded a strikeout and Erickson popped out to leave all three runners on base.
In the bottom of the ninth, Columbia's Hilary Jacobs reached second with an infield hit to Erickson at third but Princeton's defense kept her there for all three outs.
Adelfio walked Bingham and Finley in the tenth but once again allowed no runs. For the Lions, Courtney Ryan and Marisa Marconi hit back-to-back singles in the 14th and a passed ball on April Jarvis' at-bat put Ryan on third. Jarvis then flied out to Finley in centerfield and the game went into the 15th inning.
After Princeton had another three up, three down inning, Stephanie Reeder singled into right field and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lexie Costic. Shortstop Monica Thompson hit the game-winner with a deep fly double into leftfield that scored Reeder.
Cobb-Adams, Lueke, and Bingham each finished with two hits for the Tigers, while Snyder allowed 10 hits and just one walk in 15 innings.
Game 2 looked much like the first, as Finley and Columbia's Allison Buehler took the mound and allowed no runs in seven innings.
In the bottom of third, Columbia put runners on second and third with two outs but first baseman Kristin Del Calvo tagged Marisa Marconi out at first to end the inning. Lueke opened the fourth with a single, Finley walked, and Snyder loaded the bases with a single to the shortstop but Erickson popped out for another scoreless inning.
There were no hits again until the bottom of the seventh when, with two outs, Laura Drazdowski smacked a double into leftfield and moved Taylor Tierney, who walked, to third. But Jarvis grounded to Erickson who made the play to first and forced the game into extra innings.
Davida led off the eighth with a single into right-center and advanced to second and third on a sacrifice grounder by Bingham and a base-hit by Ries. With two outs, Finley ripped a single down leftfield and scored Davida for the Tigers first run of the day. Princeton took a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth and held the Lions scoreless.
Princeton return from New York with an 18-12-1 overall record and a 9-1 Ivy League mark, while Columbia moves to 15-17 overall and 5-5 in the Ivy League. The Tigers travel to Seton Hall this Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m.
