SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Amanda Erickson went 3 for 5 with a double but Princeton's five errors cost the Tigers two losses to Seton Hall, 9-3 and 2-1, in a non-conference doubleheader at Cameron Field.
The Pirates took the first lead of Game 1 in the bottom of the first when, with two outs and the bases loaded, D'arcy Djakalovic hit a hard single past Amanda Erickson at third to score Laura Taylor, who reached on a bunt.
Princeton's offense peaked in the top of the third when Kristin Lueke, Wendy Bingham, and Cristina Cobb-Adams hit consecutive singles to load the bases. Cobb-Adams' grounder went directly to the shortstop but Lueke outran the play to third. Melissa Finley then doubled to deep leftfield and brought home all three base runners before the inning ended with the Tigers up 3-1.
The Pirates responded to the deficit with Laura Taylor's solo homer, her tenth of the year, to lead off the bottom of the third. Mary Carroll Smith then bunted for a base hit and advanced to second on an overthrown ball to first. Five more hits yielded five more runs for the Pirates as Princeton struggled with fielding errors. With two outs, Snyder intentionally walked Taylor before Smith stepped up and slammed a grounder through the middle to score two more runs and improve Seton Hall's lead to 8-3.
Princeton adjusted its defense in the fourth when Finley replaced Snyder at the mound, and Snyder moved to first in place of Bingham. The change didn't shake Djakalovic, who connected on Finley's first pitch for her first career home run. The Tigers held Seton Hall for the remaining three innings but the Pirates took the first game, 9-3.
In the second game, Seton Hall loaded the bases twice and Princeton once before either team got on the board. After four scoreless innings, Nicole Davida got on first with a bunt in the fifth before Bingham's single to the outfield put runners on first and second. Cobb-Adams singled into leftfield to bring home Davida, give Princeton the 1-0 lead, and force the Pirates to bring in Megan Myer for Casey McDevitt on the mound.
Smith tripled in the bottom of the fifth with a fly to the left center fence, and Katie Pierce followed that with a double and RBI to tie the game, 1-1. Pierce advanced to third on a wild pitch and stole home when Katie Flynn drew the Tigers' attention to second. Snyder made the play to home base but Pierce scored for a 2-1 Seton Hall lead.
Neither team scored in the sixth or the seventh, as Seton Hall ended the day with the 11-4 sweep.
The losses put Princeton at 18-14-1 overall while Seton Hall improves to 26-11. The Tigers, who remain atop the Ivy League standings with an 8-1 mark, host their final Ivy doubleheaders this weekend. They play Dartmouth at 1 p.m. on Saturday before a 12 p.m. match-up with Harvard on Sunday.
