Box Score
PRINCETON, N.J. - Kristin Lueke went 5 for 7 and Ty Ries hit a game-winning home run to lead Princeton past Dartmouth, 3-0 and 2-1, and move to just one win away from clinching the outright Ivy League title.
The Tigers took their first lead in the second inning of Game 1 when Lueke hit a two-run triple. Ries led off the inning with a single to right field and Erin Valocsik walked before Lueke, a left-handed slap hitter, blasted a shot into right centerfield. Lueke's speed helped her reach third, scored Ries and Valocsik, and gave Princeton a 2-0 lead that it carried through the next four innings.
Princeton put an insurance run on the board in the sixth when Lueke singled and Melissa Finley brought her home. The Tigers got three hits in the inning, including a single by Nicole Davida, who finished the day at 3 for 5. Princeton held Dartmouth to another scoreless inning in the seventh and completed the first game with a decisive 3-0 win. Erin Snyder (10-7) struck out 10 batters and walked none in seven innings for the Tigers.
In the second game, Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead in its first inning at bat. Carly Haggard singled to centerfield and Kisa Brannen advanced her to third with a single to left. Haggard crossed home on a double-steal before shortstop Cristina Cobb-Adams tagged the third out of the inning at first base.
The Tigers tied the score in the third when Lueke led off the inning with a double to leftfield and Wendy Bingham followed that with a single to shortstop. Lueke advanced to third on Bingham's hit and eventually scored on a passed ball.
After two scoreless innings for both teams, Ries put the game away with a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth. The home run was the first for sophomore Ries, who was unable to bat last season due to injury. With a 2-1 lead, the Tigers held the Big Green in the seventh and finished the day with a sweep.
Finley (7-3) pitched all seven innings for Princeton, striking out six and walking none.
The Tigers improve to 20-14-1 overall and 10-1 in the Ivy League before their final league match-up. With just one Ivy loss and with every other Ivy team with at least four, Princeton can clinch the outright title if it wins at least one game against Harvard tomorrow.
Cornell, which was second in the standings after Princeton, split with Yale today and fell to three games behind the Tigers. However, if Princeton loses both against Harvard, and Cornell loses at least one game against Brown tomorrow, the Tigers must travel to Brown to finish a game from early April that was called in the ninth. Princeton would win the Ivy title if it defeated Brown or it would share the title with a loss.
Princeton hosts the crucial doubleheader against Harvard tomorrow, April 27 at 12 p.m.
