Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton baseball team rebounded from two straight losses with a 10-2 win Wednesday afternoon at Clarke Field. Princeton used four pitchers who struck out a combined 14 batters and allowed only seven hits. The Tiger offense was balanced between four batters who each tallied multiple RBIs.
Princeton is now 7-14 this season while Rider drops to 6-10.
Rider scored one run in the first to take a 1-0 lead. The Tigers answered right back in the bottom of the first when B.J. Szymanski scored on a ground out from Jon Miller. Princeton scored three more runs in the second to take a 4-1 lead after two innings of play. With one out in the second, Matthew Becker doubled with one out. He advanced to third when DH Will Venable singled. Becker scored and Venable was called out when B.J. Szymanski reached on a fielder's choice. Miller and Ryan Eldridge drew walks to load the bases to bring Andy Salini to the plate. Salini responded with a single through the right side that scored Miller and Szymanski and was called out trying to stretch the hit into a double. Rider ate one run away from Princeton's lead in the fourth, but the Tigers scored four in the fifth to take an 8-2 lead. With Becker and Adam Balkan on base, Szymanski doubled to score both runners. Rider then intentionally walked Miller to pitch to Eldridge. The plan backfired and Eldridge laced a double that scored Miller and Szymanski.
Princeton added an additional run in both the seventh and eighth innings. In the seventh, Will Venable doubled and came home on a single by Miller, while in the eighth inning, Balkan tripled to the wall in right center and came home on an error by the Rider shortstop on a Mike Chernoff grounder.
The Tigers used four pitchers on Wednesday. The starter Brian Biegen earned the win after striking out six over three innings of work. He allowed two hits and an earned run and had his second consecutive strong outing. Brian Kappel worked two innings for the Tigers, allowing two hits and notching a strikeout. Worth Lumry struck out two in his inning of work and Thomas Pauly wrapped up the day pitching three scoreless innings and striking out five as he picked up his first save of the season.
Princeton returns to action this weekend with their Ivy League opener on Saturday against Brown. The first game is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. at Clarke Field.
