Baseball Splits With Columbia

Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton baseball team earned an Ivy League split against Columbia this afternoon at Clarke Field. In the opener, Eric Fitzgerald singled home Andrew Salini in the sixth to cap a Princeton comeback and put the Tigers ahead 5-4, while in the second game, Columbia connected for eight runs on 14 hits to defeat the Tigers 8-2.
The first game began with Princeton taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning on B.J. Szymanski's solo home run to right center. After a scoreless second, Columbia posted four runs in the third to go ahead 4-1. Princeton answered back in the bottom-half of the inning with two more runs to make it a one-run game. Steve Young hit a leadoff single and advanced to second base when Szymanski reached on an error. Young was then caught in a double steal, which advanced Szymanski to second. Jon Miller then hit a fly ball to right field that was dropped and allowed Szymanski to move to third. Ryan Eldridge grounded out, but scored Szymanski and advanced Miller to second base. Miller then came home on an RBI-double by Salini down the right field line.
The score remained 4-3 in favor of the Lions until Princeton came to bat in the sixth. Salini led off with a single and later stole second. Will Venable then reached on an infield single to the first baseman that moved Salini over to third base. Salini scored on the next play as Mike Chernoff hot a sacrifice fly. Venable also moved to second on the play. That set the stage for Fitzgerald who laced a hit to right field that scored Venable and put the Tigers on top for good.
Ryan Quillian pitched the first six innings and earned his fifth win of the season. Thomas Pauly came in to pitch the seventh inning and earned his fourth save of the year.
For the first four innings, Game 2 appeared to be going the Tigers way as well. The Tigers took an early 1-0 lead in the first when Miller scored Young on a ground out. Princeton held the lead until the fifth inning when Columbia went on top 3-1 following a three-run home run by Billy Hess. The Lions added another run in the sixth to go up 4-1 before the Tigers added a run in the bottom of the inning.
Miller led off the inning with a walk and went to third on Eldridge's single. He came then came home when Salini grounded out into a double play. Columbia tacked on four more runs over the final three innings to defeat Princeton 8-2. David Boehle was credited with the loss and he now stands at 3-2 on the season.
Princeton returns to action tomorrow afternoon at home against Columbia at 1 p.m.
