Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton baseball team clinched at least a tie for the Ivy League's Gehrig Division with its 3-1 victory in the opener of a double header with Columbia this afternoon at Clarke Field. The Tigers have won the Gehrig Division for five consecutive years and can seal up their sixth title with one win in next weekend's four-game series against Cornell.
The Tigers are now 31-28 on the season and 12-4 in the Ivy League. With today's win the Tigers' magic number is one. Penn stands 12-8 in the league and is done with its games, while Cornell is 8-8 and would have to sweep the Tigers next weekend to force the tiebreaker.
In the opening game, clutch hitting and a strong outing from starting pitcher Ross Ohlendorf fueled the Tigers. He scattered five hits and an unearned run over 5.1 innings f work to notch his first win of the season. Thomas Pauly pitched the final 1.2 innings and posted his fifth save. With the score knotted at 0-0 in the third, Princeton went ahead for good on Ryan Eldridge's two-run single. With one out, Steve Young walked and advanced to third on B.J. Szymanski's single up the middle. Szymankski stole second and both runners scored on Eldridge's hit through the right side. Princeton tacked on an additional run in the fourth. Tim Lahey led off the inning with a double and came home when Eric Fitzgerald singled through the left side.
In Game 2, Columbia scored 11 runs on 15 hits to earn the series split with the Tigers. The Lions used a six-run third inning to set the tone and Princeton was unable to draw back even. The Tigers got as close as 6-2 when Fitzgerald, Szymanski and Jon Miller were able to string together three base hits. Princeton added additional runs in the sixth and the eighth.
Mark Siano took the loss and is now 3-2 this season. Nate Miller, Bill Broome, Worth Lumry and Matt Sullivan all saw action coming out of the bullpen.
Princeton returns to action tomorrow evening at St. John's at 7 p.m.
