Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton baseball team began the 2003 Ivy League season by splitting a double header with Brown Saturday afternoon at Clarke Field. Brown won the opener 7-3, but Will Venable's single up the middle in the eighth inning of Game 2 put Princeton on top for good as the Tigers posted an 8-6 win.
In the first game of the day, Brown got to Princeton starter Ryan Quillian early, scoring five runs on six hits in the first inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from Paul Christian. Princeton scored two runs in the third to make it 5-2. Steve Young reached base after being hit by a pitch and advanced to third on B.J. Szymanski's single through the left side. Jon Miller then singled through the left side to score Young and move Szymanski to third. Szymanski came home when Ryan Eldridge hit into a fielder's choice. Princeton managed one additional run in the seventh when Szymanski came home following a double by Miller. Quillian fell to 2-3 this season as he pitched all seven innings for the Tigers.
In the second game, it was Princeton that came out strong offensively, scoring six runs over the first two innings. In the first, Young scored on a bases-loaded fielder's choice by Eldridge and Szymanski reached home after an error by the Brown shortstop.
The Bears evened up the score with two in the second, but Princeton answered right back with four runs in the bottom of the second. With one out, Will Venable reached on an error. Mike Chernoff then walked and Young was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Szymanski then ripped a grounder just inside the third base bag that scored two runs. Miller followed it up with a double that scored Young and Szymanski. Following a Brown pitching change, Andy Salini singled home Miller and for the final run of the inning. Brown began to chip away at the lead, scoring one in the third and three in the seventh. The three in the seventh came off a three-run homer from Matt Kutler.
With the score 6-6, Princeton came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Tim Lahey led off and reached first on a throwing error by the third baseman. Adam Balkan then hit into a fielder's choice that advanced Lahey to second. Venable then ripped a single up the middle, which scored Lahey. Venable also advanced to second on the throw. Following another Brown pitching change, Chernoff drew a walk and Young reached on a fielder's choice in which all runners were safe as the second baseman through the ball into Chernoff's back as he ran from first to second. Szymanski then grounded out to first base, but it scored Venable to give Princeton the 8-6 lead.
Princeton reliever Thomas Pauly through two innings of relief and earned his second win of the season.
The Tigers return to action tomorrow afternoon at 12 noon against Yale.
