Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton baseball team swept Yale Saturday afternoon in Ivy League action at Clarke Field. In the opener, Eric Fitzgerald blasted a three-run home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Tigers a 7-4 win and in the second game, the Princeton offense erupted for 16 runs on 17 hits to improve to 10-15 overall and 3-1 in the Ivy League.
In the opening game Yale jumped ahead 2-0 in the third but Princeton moved within one in the bottom of the inning when Matthew Becker scored on a B.J. Szymanski sacrifice. Yale extended its lead to 3-1 in the fourth but Princeton claimed its first lead in its next at bat to make it 4-3. Tim Lahey led off with a triple to fence in right-center. Andy Salini and Ryan Reich both drew walks to load the bases. Yale pitcher Mike Elias got the next two batters out with a strike out and a fly out, but Becker doubled down the left field line to clear the bases. The score remained 4-3 until the top of the seventh when they manufactured a run to even the score. Princeton could not muster a run in the bottom of the seventh, so the game went to extra innings. Both team's went quickly in the eighth, ninth and tenth innings. Finally in the 11th, after Yale failed to score in the top of the inning, Princeton came to bat. With an out, Salini doubled down the left field line. Yale then intentionally walked Reich to pitch to Eric Fitzgerald. The plan backfired as Fitzgerald launched his second home run of the season over the fence in right-center to give Princeton the 7-4 win.
Thomas Pauly pitched six innings and improved to 3-0 with the win. He struck out seven and allowed one earned run. Princeton starter David Boehle threw five innings with three strikeouts. Becker and Fitzgerald led Princeton with three RBIs apiece.
In the second game of the double header, Yale jumped ahead early with three in the second inning. The Tigers chipped away a run in both the second and third innings to make it 3-2. Yale added two more in the fifth, but a three-run Tiger fifth reversed the game's momentum. Steve Young led off with a single. Szymanski then doubled, moving Young to third. After a Yale pitching change, Jon Miller reached on an error that also scored both Szymanski and Young. Miller advanced to third and scored on a grounder by Reich.
The Tigers scored four more in the sixth to take control of the game. Will Venable led off with a walk and scored on an error by the second baseman in dealing with a pop-up by Young. Now with two runners on base, Jon Miller doubled to scored both runs. The Tigers final run of the inning came when Miller scored on an error on a Reich ground ball.
The Tigers added seven more runs over the final two innings to seal the 16-6 victory. Worth Lumry worked two innings and picked up his first career win. Brian Biegen started the game for Princeton, pitching 4.2 innings allowing five runs on eight hits. Bill Broome came in for the final 2.1 innings and earned his first save of the year.
Offensively, several Tigers had strong afternoons. Ryan Eldridge had four RBIs, Szymanski was 5-for-6 with an RBI and scored three runs, Young went 3-for-6 with two RBI and three runs scored, and Miller was 1-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs.
Princeton returns to Clarke Field Tuesday afternoon to meet Rutgers at 3 p.m.
