PRINCETON, N.J. - Erin Snyder recorded 11 strikeouts and no walks in seven innings, and went 2 for 3 with two RBIs as Princeton defeated Penn, 3-2, in the Ivy League opener. In the second game of the doubleheader, Melissa Finley earned the 4-3 win on the mound while batting 2 for 2 with a homer, two runs, and an RBI.
In Game 1, leadoff batter Kristin Lueke and Cristina Cobb-Adams both walked and eventually scored when Snyder doubled to leftfield in the first inning. The Tigers held a 1-0 lead until the seventh, when Penn scored two runs off two hits. Meghan Cowen and Erin O'Brien each doubled to the outfield to tie the score, 2-2. Princeton responded in the bottom of the seventh with a single to centerfield by Erin Valocsik and a single to right by Wendy Bingham. Lueke earned the game-winning RBI when her single to the shortstop sent home Valocsik and gave Princeton the final 3-2 advantage over the Quakers.
The second game featured Finley, who pitched three scoreless innings and then hit her fifth homer of the season in the bottom of the third. Penn immediately matched the homer when O'Brien notched a solo of her own to tie the score, 1-1, in the top of the fourth.
Princeton used the fourth and fifth innings to record six hits and three unanswered runs. Third baseman Ty Ries singled and advanced to second on a groundout by Bingham before Lueke sent her to third and put herself on second with a bunt. Cobb-Adams' single to centerfield scored Ries and Lueke to end the fourth with the Tigers up 3-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Finley walked and then scored off a double by freshman catcher Amanda Erickson. The Quakers managed two hits and two runs in the sixth, but Princeton held on to win its first Ivy game of the season, 4-3.
The Tigers move above the .500 mark for the first time this season with an 11-10-1 overall record. They are 2-0 in the Ivy League and next travel to Towson on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. non-conference game.
