Ithaca, N.Y. - The Princeton baseball teamed closed out it's Ivy League schedule with a sweep of Cornell Sunday afternoon at Hoy Field. Princeton won the opener 4-0 and claimed a 9-3 win in the second game.
In the opening game, Thomas Pauly pitched a complete game four-hit shutout and struck out 11 as Princeton earned a 4-0 win. The Tigers took advantage of two hits and two Big Red errors in the first to jump to an early 3-0 lead.
Steve Young led off by bunting and reached first on a throwing error by the pitcher. B.J. Szymanski followed with a triple just inside the first base bag that rolled all the way to fence and scored Young. Jon Miller then flied a ball to right field that the outfielder dropped and allowed Szymanski to score. Ryan Eldridge then lined a double off the first baseman's glove that pushed Miller on to third. Miller then scored on an RBI-groundout from Adam Balkan. Princeton added an additional run in the second inning. With one out, Eric Fitzgerald legged out an infield single and advanced to second on an ensuing wild pitch. Fitzgerald tagged up and went to third when Steve Young flied out. He came home when the following batter, Szymanski, reached on a throwing error by the second baseman.
Game 2 turned out to be a pitcher's duel as both teams were scoreless through six innings. Cornell jumped ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh when the Big Red strung together a single, a hit batter, a double, a walk and a single.
Princeton stormed back in its next at bat to take a 4-3 lead. Ryan Reich and Mike Chernoff began the inning with back-to-back singles. Young hit into a fielder's choice to advance Reich, but Chernoff was forced out at second. Eric Fitzgerald came in as a pinch hitter and reached on an error by the second baseman that scored Reich and moved Young to second. Jon Miller then drew a walk to load the bases. After a pitching change Ryan Eldridge grounded in a run to make the score 4-2. With two men remaining on base, Andy Salini ripped a double to the gap in right center that cleared the bases and put Princeton ahead.
Princeton added five more runs in the ninth to make the score 9-3. Again, Reich and Chernoff started the rally with back-to-back hits. The highlight of the inning was a grand slam home run hit by Eldridge well beyond the fence in right center.
Ohlendorf was strong through six innings, allowing only two hits while striking out eight batters. Mark Siano came in to pitch in the seventh inning and earned his fourth win of the season. Worth Lumry and Bill Broome closed out the win.
Princeton has one final regular season game left before hosting the Ivy League Championship Series next weekend at Clarke Field. The Tigers host Rutgers on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m., in a game that was rescheduled after a snow-out a little over a month ago.
