Field Hockey Faces Big Test at No. 3 Maryland

The No. 10-ranked Princeton field hockey team faces its biggest test to date Friday night when its travels to third-ranked Maryland. Game time in College Park is 6 p.m. at the Terps' Field Hockey/Lacrosse Complex.
The Tigers (4-1) last played this past Saturday, defeating Dartmouth 5-1 to improve to 2-0 in Ivy League Play. Lauren Quinn had a goal and an assist for the Tigers, who scored five goals for the third time in five games this season. Freshman goalie Allison Nemeth was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week for the second time in three weeks after stopping three shots against the Big Green.
Maryland (9-0) has dominated its competition in the early season, outscoring opponents by an impressive 52-4 margin over its first nine games. Paula Infante and Jackie Ciconte lead the Terps with 11 and 10 goals respectively. The Terps also play host to top-ranked Wake Forest this weekend.
Today's Fact of the Day On the Offensive Princeton and Maryland have combined to outscore their opponents 72-14 this season. The Tigers have scored five goals in three of their five games, while the Terps have scored at least five goals seven times in nine games.

Fear the Turtle The Terps have defeated the Tigers five straight times. Princeton's last win over Maryland came during the 1998 season.
Fear the Tiger, Too Princeton has reached the NCAA tournament in eight of the last nine years and has reached the national semifinals four of those years. The Tigers have reached at least the second round in seven of those eight appearances.
Holding Their Place The Tigers have been the No. 10-ranked team in the STX/NFHCA poll in each of the first three weeks this season.
I'm Honored Freshman goalie Allison Nemeth has been the Ivy League Rookie of the Week twice in the first three weeks of the 2003 season. Nemeth has allowed just three goals in 214 minutes in net this season.
Pulling Rank Maryland is the second team ranked in the top five nationally on Princeton's schedule this season. The Tigers lost 3-2 to then-No. 4 Penn State two weeks ago.

New Kid in Town Kristen Holmes-Winn was named head coach at Princeton in March 2003. Holmes-Winn, who played at Iowa, replaced 15-year head coach Beth Bozman, now the coach at fourth-ranked Duke.
Balancing Act 10 different players have scored Princeton's 20 goals this season.
Out of Their League Princeton has won nine straight Ivy League championships. The Tigers are 61-1 in their last 62 Ivy League games.
All-American Girls Princeton had seven All-Americas in 2002, the most of any Division I team in the nation. Four of those players?Lizzie Black, Natalie Martirosian, Claire Miller and Cory Picketts?are still on the team this season.
Captain, My Captain Claire Miller and Cory Picketts are the Tiger captains in 2003. Miller was a first-team All-America in 2002 and has three goals this year, while Picketts earned second-team All-America honors in 2002 and has two goals and an assist this year.
Double-Digit Vision Princeton has won at least 11 games each of the past 11 years and has finished at .500 or above in each of the past 16 seasons.
